A 10-year-old boy is facing multiple felony charges in Pennsylvania after police say he entered a Dollar Tree store armed with a knife, attempted to rob the business, and stabbed an employee multiple times during a struggle with workers who intervened.
Authorities say the incident unfolded Monday evening in Swatara Township, near Harrisburg, and ended with store employees detaining the child until police arrived on scene.
According to the Swatara Township Police Department, officers were dispatched to the Dollar Tree around 5 p.m. after receiving reports of an armed robbery in progress.
When police arrived at the scene, they found the boy already restrained by store employees who had subdued him following the confrontation inside the store and held him until officers could safely take custody, FOX 5 reported.
Investigators said the child allegedly entered the store carrying a fixed-blade knife and approached a female employee while demanding money.
Police said the boy threatened the worker during the attempted robbery, prompting multiple employees to intervene as the situation escalated rapidly inside the business and created a violent struggle near the front of the store.
Authorities said that during the struggle, the boy stabbed one of the employees multiple times while workers attempted to restrain him and prevent further harm to staff and customers inside the store.
Police did not release detailed information about the severity of the victim’s injuries but confirmed the employee required immediate medical treatment following the incident, according to NBC Philadelphia.
Witness statements reviewed by investigators indicate that employees acted quickly to protect the targeted worker and worked together to physically restrain the child until responding officers arrived at the scene minutes later.
Police said the boy was taken into custody without further incident once officers secured the store.Â
The suspect was later transported to a juvenile detention facility and booked on charges including robbery, aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, and possession of an instrument of crime.Â
Authorities said he remains in custody pending juvenile court proceedings as the case moves through the legal system, with additional hearings expected in the coming weeks.
Police have not released details on how the child obtained the knife or what may have led to the alleged robbery attempt.
Investigators also have not identified the injured employee, and no updated information has been provided regarding the victim’s current condition or recovery status following the attack, according to The Independent.
The case comes amid broader national concern over youth-involved violence in public spaces, including a widely reported incident in Boston last month in which juveniles allegedly robbed a lemonade stand, contributing to ongoing debates over juvenile crime trends, prevention efforts, and how communities respond to early signs of violent behavior among minors.
