A body was discovered hanging from a tree at a Texas high school on Thursday morning, leading to the cancellation of classes for the day.
The discovery of the teenager’s cadaver was made shortly before 8 a.m. by two staff members at Travis Early College High School on what would have been only the fourth day of school in the academic year, according to Austin Independent School District Police Chief Wayne Sneed.
“Staff reacted very quickly in securing the area and making sure no students ever got into that immediate area,” Sneed said during a press conference. “So there was no exposure to students at all.”
Officers from both the AISD Police Department and Austin Police Department (AustinPD) arrived at the scene swiftly and confirmed the presence of a deceased individual in the school’s rear. Medical personnel arrived shortly thereafter and pronounced the individual dead at the scene.
While the body has not yet been identified, police believe that the individual was a woman in her late teens. The young woman’s exact cause of death remains elusive.
AISD, in a swift response, announced the cancellation of all classes at William B Travis High School for the day. The district emphasized the security of the campus, asserting that no immediate danger exists for students or staff members.
