Steve Bannon, former White House chief strategist to President Donald Trump, put an abrupt end to swirling rumors about his potential 2028 presidential bid with just two words: “Trump 2028.”
The brief but unmistakable response came after a Daily Mail report cited “well-placed” sources close to Bannon claiming he was seeking political advice for a possible White House run.
That report also suggested Bannon privately criticized Vice President J.D. Vance, who is widely seen as a front-runner to lead the GOP ticket in 2028.
Bannon’s curt dismissal left little doubt where his allegiance lies.
He made clear that his focus remains on supporting President Trump’s political future rather than launching his own bid.
A source close to Bannon told the Daily Mail that the strategist has repeatedly expressed doubts about Vance’s toughness and readiness to handle a presidential run.
But Bannon’s public messaging remains firmly in support of Trump’s continued leadership, as Fox News reported.
Trump himself recently weighed in, calling Vance “the favored” candidate to become his political heir apparent. Trump praised Vance’s prospects and said he would make a strong nominee if he chose to run.
The president also mentioned Secretary of State Marco Rubio as a potential running mate, though he noted it was still “too early” to discuss ticket details.
Senator Rubio echoed Trump’s sentiments in a recent interview. He described Vance as a “great nominee” if he decides to pursue the presidency.
The Daily Mail article drew criticism from The National Pulse, a conservative outlet, which accused the report of having “thinly sourced” claims. The National Pulse argued the story was part of a deliberate attempt to sow division within the Republican Party by fueling speculation about internal rivalries ahead of 2028.
Bannon himself has repeatedly denied plans for a presidential run. In a March interview with Politico, he said, “All I do is back President Trump and try to move the populist agenda and the America First agenda. I don’t think like a politician.” He went so far as to call the idea of his candidacy “absurd.”
Back in April, Bannon discussed constitutional alternatives that might allow Trump to bypass term limits. “We have a team looking at those alternatives,” he told News Nation, indicating continued efforts to keep Trump politically relevant beyond the usual constraints.
Supporting that notion, just three days after Trump’s 2025 inauguration, Representative Andy Ogles introduced a constitutional amendment proposal that would permit Trump to serve a third and final term. While the measure was referred to the House Judiciary Committee, it has yet to gain traction.
Meanwhile, speculation about Trump’s 2028 ambitions is also fueled by merchandise sales. The official Trump Store continues selling “TRUMP 2028” hats and gear. This keeps the conversation alive among his base.
