Aides for President Biden have found at least one more batch of classified documents at a second location separate from the Penn Biden Center office in Washington, D.C., which he used during his time as vice president under the Obama administration.
NBC News, who first reported the development, cited a source who claimed that Biden aides had been searching for additional documents containing classified material in locations other than the Penn Biden Center — locations that may have been used by the president.
The development comes after a batch of classified documents were found in Biden’s private office at the Penn Biden Center on Tuesday.
Richard Saubel, special counsel to the White House, told reporters that a “small number of documents with classified markings” were discovered at the Penn Biden Center by the president’s personal attorneys on Nov. 2.
The documents were found in a locked closet while the attorneys were preparing to vacate office space at the center, which the president used from mid-2017 until beginning his 2020 campaign.
The National Archives were notified of the finding and took possession of the documents on Nov. 3, Saubel said.
“The documents were not the subject of any previous request or inquiry by the Archives,” Saubel said in a statement. “Since that discovery, the President’s personal attorneys have cooperated with the Archives and the Department of Justice in process to ensure that any Obama-Biden Administration records are appropriately in the possession of the Archives.”
The contents of the documents are still unknown, but a source claimed to CNN that they reportedly include U.S. intelligence memos and briefing notes on Iran, Ukraine and the United Kingdom.
The revelation comes just months after Biden blasted former President Donald Trump when multiple sets of classified documents were found in his Florida estate Mar-a-Lago.
During a “60 Minutes” interview, host Scott Pelley asked Biden, “When you saw the photograph of the top-secret documents laid out on the floor at Mar-a-Lago, what did you think to yourself? Looking at that image.”
“How that could possibly happen,” Biden answered. “How one – anyone could be that irresponsible. And I thought what data was in there that may compromise sources and methods? By that I mean names of people who helped or – et cetera. And it just – totally irresponsible.”
Biden has since confessed that he doesn’t know what’s in the documents, and said that he was fully cooperating with the Department of Justice.
“I was briefed about this discovery and surprised to learn that there were any government records that were taken there to that office,” the president said in response to a slew of questions during a recent interview. “But I don’t know what’s in the documents. My lawyers have not suggested I ask what documents they were.”
