President Joe Biden jumped in on the dogpile on Republican presidential candidate Ron DeSantis following his 2024 presidential campaign announcement on Wednesday.
Biden poken fun at the Florida governor’s technical difficulties as he attempted to reveal his ambitions for the Oval Office.
Biden chimed in immediately after DeSantis’ campaign announcement on Wednesday, using the Florida governor’s technically challenged Twitter space platform for his campaign announcement as an opportunity to plug his own 2024 campaign in a snarky fundraising tweet.
Following the shambolic DeSantis Twitter space, president Biden tweeted a link to a fundraising page for his own campaign, captioned “This link works” — a reference to a defective fundraising link sent out by the DeSantis campaign at the time of his glitchy campaign launch, which reportedly led users to a plain black screen with a small image at the center.
Biden followed up his fundraising message by tweeting a video attacking DeSantis for certain policy positions, ending the video by juxtaposing the chaotic Twitter space with the question, “Can you launch a presidential campaign?” The video edits the echoing Twitter space with footage of DeSantis laughing, implying that the Florida governor’s supposed ineptitude in launching his campaign is a poor reflection on his leadership.
It was reported last Tuesday that DeSantis would announce his run for the presidency on Twitter Spaces, a feature which allows users to engage in live audio chats with each other.
However, the plan was replete with technical snafus as it proceeded. The initial Twitter Space, hosted by Elon Musk, was riddled with unplanned silences and strange echoes, and seemed to crash under the burden of its many listeners.
Ultimately, the conversation was moved to a different space, this time hosted not by Musk but by venture capitalist David Sacks. Listeners were subjected to various periods of radio silence and banter about the technical difficulties, giving the announcement itself an air of the anticlimactic. By the time DeSantis began reciting his announcement speech, he was already over 20 minutes behind the scheduled start time.
President Trump also addressed DeSantis’ bathetic announcement before the Space had even concluded. In typical Trump style, his response was brasher and more direct, with the president unleashing a torrent of insults at the “sanctimonious” Floridian. Trump posted a video as well, which comically juxtaposed enthusiastic footage of his own campaign announcement with the dullness and silence of DeSantis’ social media calamity.
