President Joe Biden did not hold back when addressing Ohio Rep. Jim Jordan’s recent unsuccessful bid for the House speakership.
“He just got his rear-end kicked,” said the president, referring to the would-be House speaker and MAGA stalwart.
Biden’s remarks came during a fundraiser in Washington, D.C., as reported by The Hill. Jordan’s aspirations for the speaker’s gavel were dashed after three rounds of voting, in which Jordan failed to secure the necessary votes from his own party to assume the speakership. This led the Republican conference to conduct a secret ballot, seeking an alternative candidate. The outcome revealed that over 110 House Republicans favored another nominee.
Jim Jordan is known as an unwavering supporter of former President Trump — who himself has supported Jordan’s bid to become House speaker. Jordan has shared the former president’s skepticism of the legitimacy of the 2020 presidential election, earning the ire of Democrats who malign Jordan as an “election denier.”
The chaos surrounding McCarthy’s ouster has left a notable vacuum in the leadership of the House. Both Louisiana Rep. Steve Scalise and Jordan received nominations from the conference but fell short in garnering the necessary backing. The House Republicans, recognizing the urgency, are exploring various candidates for the role and have planned a forum for the upcoming week.
Biden’s administration, for the most part, has refrained from getting embroiled in this turmoil. However, recent actions suggest a shift. They are drawing attention to the disarray within the House Republican Party. Their position hinges on the belief that the electorate will appreciate Biden’s dedication to public interests, especially when juxtaposed against the internal strife of the opposition.
