President Joe Biden did little to quell a growing controversy when he spoke with reporters regarding the disclosure that classified documents were found in his office at the Penn Biden Center for Diplomacy and Global Engagement and in a Corvette housed in his Delaware home garage.
President Biden seemed to attempt to minimize the revelation that a second batch of classified documents was found at his home by affirming that he “takes classified material seriously” and that the documents were safe in his Corvette because his garage was “locked,” noting “it’s not like it was sitting out on the street.”
Reporters asked Biden to comment on the matter after Richard Sauber, special counsel to the president said in a statement that “all but one of these documents were found in [a] storage space in the President’s Wilmington residence garage.”
According to The Daily Wire, Sauber added that the other document found was “discovered among stored materials in an adjacent room.”
Fox News White House correspondent Peter Doocy, a perennial thorn in Biden’s side, pointedly asked the president to explain himself during Thursday’s press conference:
“Classified material next to your Corvette?” Doocy asked. “What were you thinking?”
Biden replied: “Let me, I’m going to get a chance to speak on all this, God willing, soon, but as I said earlier this week, people and, by the way, my Corvette’s in a locked garage, OK? So it’s not like they’re sitting out in the street.”
When asked to confirm that classified documents were in a locked garage on his property, Biden responded, “Yes, as well as my Corvette.”
“But as I said earlier this week,” Biden explained, “people know, I take classified documents and classified material seriously.”
Biden continued: “I also said we’re cooperating fully and completely with the Justice Department’s review.”
Biden added: “As part of that process, my lawyer has reviewed other places where documents from my time as vice president were stored and they finished the review last night. They discovered a small number of documents with classified markings in storage areas, and file cabinets in my home and in my personal library.”
Biden also noted his legal team had turned all classified documents over to Department of Justice officials.
Donald Trump Jr. mocked the president in a tweet:
“To summarize, we’ve gone from:
– Biden declaring how careful he is with classified information
– To ‘whoops!’
– To ‘But muh Corvette was locked, man!’…In just a few days.”
In late-breaking news, Attorney General Merrick Garland has appointed U.S. Attorney Robert Hur to serve as special counsel to investigate President Biden’s handling of classified material.
