President Joe Biden directed sharp remarks at members of the press during a public event at the White House on Sunday night. After signing the Social Security Fairness Act, Biden took questions from attendees, addressing topics that ranged from President-elect Donald Trump to his own qualifications as a leader.
When a reporter asked if he still considered Trump a threat to democracy, Biden responded firmly, “I think what he did was a genuine threat to democracy.” His remarks followed recent concerns over Trump’s proposed plan to end birthright citizenship, as reported by Fox News.
However, Biden quickly shifted his focus to reporters present at the event, delivering a pointed statement: “I might be the oldest president, but I know more world leaders than any one of you have ever met in your whole godd*mn life!”
His comments drew swift reactions on social media, particularly on X. Critics were quick to voice their disapproval.
“‘I’ve met so many world leaders!’ Yeah, you’re the president. That’s not an accomplishment,” wrote Collin Rugg, co-owner of Trending Politics.
Political commentator Dr. Carol M. Swain also weighed in, writing, “Isn’t this a non sequitur? What does his age have to do with how many leaders he has met in his political life?”
“..and they all laughed at you when you left the room,” one user wrote. Another added, “Yes, but he doesn’t remember any of them…”
Others questioned the appropriateness of his language, given his Catholic faith.
One user remarked, “I was thinking, ‘Isn’t there a commandment against using the Lord’s name in vain?’ It seems like he only remembers he’s Catholic when it suits him.” Another echoed the sentiment, stating, “Very Catholic of Joe!”
This is not the first time Biden has shown frustration with the press. Throughout his presidency, he has occasionally made pointed or sarcastic remarks to reporters.
In November, while responding to an Israeli journalist’s question about a potential hostage deal with Hamas, Biden quipped, “Do you think you can keep from getting hit in the head by a — a camera behind you?”
In a notable instance from 2022, Biden referred to Fox News reporter Peter Doocy as a “stupid son of a b*tch” after being asked whether inflation would become a political liability. Doocy later revealed that Biden personally called him to “clear the air,” assuring him the remark was “nothing personal.”
Biden’s frustrations with the press stretch back to his earlier campaigns. In 2019, while campaigning in Iowa, he lashed out at a reporter who fact-checked his claim about drawing the largest crowds among Democratic candidates, according to Breitbart News.
More recently, in February 2024, he sharply dismissed a reporter’s question about concerns over his age, rejecting suggestions that he step aside for another Democratic candidate.
In September 2024, as Hurricane Helene ravaged parts of the country, Biden responded with a snarky remark when asked why he and Vice President Kamala Harris were not in Washington overseeing the federal response.
“I was commanding,” he said. “I was on the phone for at least two hours yesterday and the day before as well. I command. It’s called a telephone.”
The president’s often blunt exchanges with reporters have become a recurring theme of his tenure, sparking debates about his temperament and media relations. As Biden nears the end of his presidency, his interactions with the press remain a focal point for both supporters and critics.
