Since his election to the presidency, Joe Biden claimed he would not interfere with the Department of Justice in cases invovling his predecessor, Donald Trump.
White House visitor logs tell what appears to be a different story of an administration coordinating with DOJ lawyers involved in prosecuting Trump.
An aide for special counsel Jack Smith met with the White House Counsel’s office just weeks prior to the indictment of former President Donald Trump on charges related to classified documents, the logs reveal.
The logs reveal that Jay Bratt, a prosecutor on Smith’s team, met March 31 with Caroline Saba, deputy chief of staff for President Joe Biden’s White House Counsel’s office, according to a report from The Epoch Times.
The nature and details of the meeting remain undisclosed, leading to speculation about the appropriateness of such a meeting, especially since it was conducted in the middle of an investigation of Trump.
Trump is likely to be Biden’s competitor in the 2024 presidential race since he continues to lead all Republicans in polling, despite four rounds of indictments from Democratic prosecutors since he declared his candidacy.
Rudy Giuliani, who has a history as a federal prosecutor, shared his concerns with the New York Post.
“[T]here is no legitimate purpose for a line guy to be meeting with the White House except if it’s coordinated by the highest levels,” the former federal prosecutor told the Post.
Giuliani further opined the meeting was aimed at coordinating prosecution of Trump, who was indicted about nine weeks later on charges that include illegal retention of national defense secrets at his Mar-a-Lago residence.
Days after the questionable meeting, an Obama-appointed judge directed Trump lawyer Evan Corcoran to testify before a grand jury in Smith’s investigation concerning documents held by Trump at his Mar-a-Lago home.
Smith’s team succeeded in obtaining more testimony from Corcoran after Chief Judge Beryl Howell dismissed attorney-client privilege claims raised by the Trump attorney before his grand jury appearance.
About nine weeks after the Bratt-Saba meeting, Smith indicted the 45th president on 37 felonies, which included charges of wilful retention of classified documents, obstruction of justice and making false statements.
Trump, on June 13, pleaded not guilty to all 37 charges, which included alleged violations of the Espionage Act.
Giuliani further commented on the March 31 meeting, suggesting that the Justice Department under Biden has taken on a political role.
“It is a Biden state prosecutor and a Biden state police,” Giuliani remarked.
Trump used his Truth Social platform to release a video portraying the indictments against him as politically motivated.
“Acting just like a corrupt third-world dictator, Biden has unleashed a cadre of unscrupulous government bureaucrats he controls to act like rabid wolves and attack his greatest threat, launching one of the greatest witch hunts in history,” the Trump video claimed.
