On Friday evening, liberal comedian and talk show host Bill Maher called on Joe Biden to drop out of the 2024 presidential election, reiterating claims made by many critics who say the 80-year-old president is too old to run again and likening him to the late Ruth Bader Ginsburg.
Maher mocked Biden on Friday night, describing the president as the “only Democrat who can lose to Trump,” during an episode of “Real Time With Bill Maher.”
“Someone has to convince President Biden that if he runs again, he’s going to turn the country back over to Trump and go … down in history as Ruth Bader Biden, the person who doesn’t know when to quit and so does great damage to their party and their country,” Maher said, referring to the late Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg.
Ginsburg infamously decided not to retire during the Obama administration, when she could have been replaced with a liberal justice and died at the age of 87 in September 2020 after former President Donald Trump had taken the White House. She was later replaced with Justice Amy Coney Barrett.
Liberals would go on to turn on Ginsburg after several pro-life rulings were made by the now-conservative-dominated Supreme Court, with one leftist going so far as to refer to her as an “old dead white b**ch,” following the state of Texas’ heartbeat law, and even more vitriol was pointed her way after the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade in 2022.
“What matters is voters think Biden’s too old. What matters is he’s going to lose to Trump,” Maher commented.
While he acknowledged Biden’s success over Donald Trump in 2020, Maher rejected the same optimistic narrative for 2024. Maher claimed that Biden was the Democratic Party’s best bet for 2020, describing him as a competent president who tackled several national and foreign issues well.
However, he felt that the president’s time was past and argued that the risks of Biden running far outweighed the potential benefits.
“You can be a national treasure and still be too old for the job. If I’m on a plane and the pilot says, ‘This is your captain, Buzz Aldrin,’ I’m getting off,” Maher joked.
Maher added that the comments weren’t ageist, as Biden’s countless gaffes as president should serve as evidence enough of his lack of fitness for office.
“That’s what case by case means at an event last weekend. Biden referred to L.L. Cool J as L.L.J. Cool J,” Maher said of the president’s latest fumble.
“Say what you want about Trump, but he remembers Kanye’s name,” Maher added.
A recent CNN poll revealed that about 75% of Americans are seriously concerned about Biden’s age and feel his ability to serve another full term would be hindered by it. In addition, most Democrats and left-leaning voters believe that the party should nominate someone other than Biden, but 82% could not name a specific other candidate.
For his part, Trump has managed to avoid hot topic discourse about his age, despite only being four years younger. If he wins in 2024, he will be 82 at the time, and would just pass Biden’s record as the oldest president ever.
