Federal authorities have charged George Isbell Jr., described as a left-wing extremist, for sending a threatening letter to conservative political commentator Benny Johnson, Attorney General Pam Bondi announced Friday.
Bondi characterized the case as part of a rising wave of politically motivated violence against conservatives nationwide.
Speaking at a press conference, Bondi emphasized the seriousness of the threat.
“He hated Benny because of his views, and he wanted Benny dead,” she said.
“We are going to catch you if you think you can do something like this. We don’t care if you’re across the country in California,” she continued. We will find you. We will arrest you, and we will extradite you and bring you to justice.”
Bondi pledged that authorities would pursue Isbell regardless of his location and vowed, “We cannot allow this political violence to continue any longer.”
The letter allegedly contained graphic threats, including plans to strangle Johnson with an American flag and harm his children.
Johnson, who has more than four million followers on X, framed the incident as part of a broader pattern of attacks on conservative figures, referencing the recent assassination of Charlie Kirk in Utah and a previous attempt on President Donald Trump in Pennsylvania.
Authorities identified Isbell through fingerprints recovered from the letter, which matched federal databases.
Court documents reveal the suspect explicitly targeted Johnson for his political beliefs, labeling him a “Charlie Kirk Jr.” and stating that he and his supporters should be “exterminated,” according to The Post Millennial.
Bondi connected the threat to a nationwide trend of radical left-wing extremism, citing incidents such as attacks on an ICE facility in Dallas and anti-Semitic actions at the Pennsylvania governor’s residence.
“Who killed Charlie? Left-wing radicals, and they will be held accountable,” she said.
Bondi underscored that the Justice Department is prepared to prosecute offenders, including considering the death penalty where applicable.
Johnson shared his personal experience, describing the threats as ideologically motivated and aimed at his family because he is a white, straight, Christian Trump supporter.
He recalled previous attacks, including a 2021 arson at his Washington, D.C., home that forced his family to relocate to Florida.
Video footage showed Johnson’s wife rescuing their newborn from the smoke-damaged residence, according to the Daily Mail.
The case highlights concerns among conservatives about the mainstreaming of political violence.
Johnson and Bondi framed the threats as part of a broader climate where left-wing radicalism increasingly targets public figures, with social media amplifying potential danger.
Bondi stressed that federal authorities are taking decisive action to prevent further attacks and hold perpetrators accountable.
