Many employers ask people they interview to talk about a time they failed and job applicants usually have a prepared answer to address that question.
Yet, according to the book, “Peril”, then-President Barack Obama gave a goose egg to President-elect Donald Trump when asked that question on the way to President Trump’s inauguration.
“Peril,” written by Bob Woodward and Robert Costa, tries to give insight into the months before and after the 2020 election, touching on subjects like the COVID-19 pandemic, the Jan. 6 riot and the 2020 presidential campaign. Woodward has been dogging in the steps of American presidents since Richard Nixon was in the White House, authoring the famous book, “All The President’s Men.”
This new Woodward book talks about Trump departing in Marine One to begin his journey to Mar-a-Lago ahead of Biden’s inauguration ceremony and reports that Trump said the experience was “full circle” from his own inauguration. The similarity apparently brought back memories of Trump’s ride with Obama, in 2017.
According to Woodward and Costa, President-elect Trump, then-President Obama and Senator Roy Blunt rode from the White House to the Capitol. Blunt was in the car because he planned the inaugural ceremony. “What was your biggest mistake?” Trump reportedly asked Obama about his term as chief executive.
The authors claim Obama, paused and looked back at Trump before replying, “I can’t think of anything.”
Trump was a successful businessman before becoming president and had probably learned how to handle unexpected responses to that question. He reportedly changed the subject, and asked, “Is this the car you use all the time?”
“Peril” has made a lot of noise in publishing and politics who both love a juicy scandal. A widely reported chapter in the book reports how General Mark Milley communicated with the Chinese to reassure them about any fears they may have had about an attack around the time of the Jan. 6 Capitol riot.
