The boyfriend of one of the victims who died in a quadruple murder at a University of Idaho off-campus housing apartment broke his silence almost three weeks after the horrific event.
Jake Schriger is the boyfriend of Madison Mogen, one of the four students who were stabbed to death while they slept on two different floors in the three-story building.
Schriger shared his emotional comments during a community memorial last Friday. The Friday evening vigil was held at the Real Life Ministries center in the nearby town of Post Falls:
“None of these people deserved this,” said Schriger, noting that Post Falls was the hometown of Xana Kernodle, 20, one of the victims.
Schriger recounted how he knew all of the students who were murdered by the assailant who still roams free. With words heavy with emotion, Jake shared how he met Mogen — recounting their first date at the Breakfast Club in Moscow and how their friendship developed into a beautiful romance.
“She was the first person I talked to every morning and the last person I talked to before bed,” Schriger said at the vigil. “She was the person that I loved most.”
Schriger’s mom had previously told the Post that Mogen “and Jake went together like peanut butter and jelly.”
The New York Post noted that Kaylee’s parents, Steve and Kristi Goncalves, and their other four children; Mogen’s father, Ben Mogen; and Kernodle’s father, Jeffrey Kernodle, were also on attendance at the vigil.
Kaylee Goncalves’ father Steve is reportedly dissatisfied with the work of the Moscow Police and told the Post he has hired a private investigator, fearing local authorities are too “inexperienced.”
The Moscow Police Department has been criticized for failing to produce the murder weapon or a suspect and backtracking on a statement noting the murders were a targeted attack.
Madison Mogen, 21; Kaylee Goncalves, 21; Ethan Chapin, 20; and Xana Kernodle, 20, died in the attack.
The coroner’s report noted that the attack likely occurred between 3 and 4 a.m. on November 13.
