On Monday, Canada’s Prime Minister Justin Trudeau posted about nationwide vigils being held for missing and murdered “Indigenous women, girls, and 2SLGBTQQIA+ people,” prompting criticism from some members of the Twitter world.
The story: Twitter’s criticism of Trudeau focused largely on the acronym he used, “2SLGBTQQIA+,” expanding the more well-known gender and sexual orientation acronym to include “two-spirit” people.
Monday night, Trudeau tweeted: “People across the country are lighting candles to honour Indigenous women, girls, and 2SLGBTQQIA+ people who are missing or have been murdered. We must continue to work together, raise awareness, and advocate to end this ongoing national tragedy. #SistersInSpirit.”
Trudeau followed up with another tweet, posting: “To those who have lost a loved one, and to survivors, know that we are here for you. If you need to talk to someone, please reach out to the Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls Support Line at 1-844-413-6649 or the Hope for Wellness Help Line at 1-855-242-3310.”
“Two-spirit” is a distinct gender status with its origins in the Native American culture.
In a more measured presentation of the acronym, Canada’s Minister of Crown–Indigenous Relations Carolyn Bennett released a statement on Monday, which read, in part, “I urge all Canadians to take time today to honour the Indigenous women, girls and Two Spirit, lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, questioning, intersex and asexual (2SLGBTQQIA+) people who are missing or have been murdered.”
Twitter’s reaction: Rather than focusing on the vigil for the missing and murdered victims, some Twitter users took the opportunity to bash the Prime Minister for his use of the elongated acronym and his image as a “woke stereotype.”
“Is that the actual acronym now or did his cat walk across the keyboard?” wrote one user.
Another user vented: “Only the 2SLGBTQQIA+? What about the F##^*#>€PKSDFNNM+¥*+? Their lived experiences matter too. Please be more inclusive. [You truly are a caricature of the worst woke stereotype. Void of any profundity.]”
British rapper Zuby posted, “Headbutting the keyboard is now a sexuality.”
“WTFI2SLGBTQQIA+STM?” wrote a different user. “Eventually, instead of an ever-expanding acronym, you’ll have to just use some logic and refer to and honour ‘everyone.'”
Another user criticized Trudeau for conflating separate issues: “It feels like colonization by a different ideology than Christianity, but still as oppressive as it was initially. Women and girls are suffering, but we must plug the gender confused for woke points. Always.”
