On Wednesday, a man armed with Molotov cocktails was arrested north of the Capitol building.
The man was arrested on Massachusetts Avenue by Capitol police around 3:30 p.m. He was in possession of two Molotov cocktails, and Capitol police claimed that “there was no indication this was related to the Capitol, Members of Congress, or any protests.”
The arrest comes after several weeks of protests over the Supreme Court’s decision to overturn Roe v. Wade, the case that made abortion legal on a federal level. The decision has been met with intense criticism on the left, and there have been several examples of the lives of Supreme Court justices being threatened, both before and after the ruling was made official.
On June 8, an armed man was arrested near the home of Justice Brett Kavanaugh. The suspect, 26-year-old Nicholas John Roske of Simi Valley, California, was carrying a gun, knife and pepper spray when arrested and had made violent threats against Kavanaugh.
This threat and others prompted the House and Senate to pass a bill increasing security for Supreme Court justices and their families. The bill passed the Senate with unanimous consent, and in the House 27 voted against the bill. All nay votes were Democrats.
