Rock guitarist Carlos Santana backtracked from the comment he made during a July concert when he told the audience, “A woman is a woman and a man is a man. That’s it.”
The 76-year-old guitarist was castigated by liberals and transgender activists for his definitive stance in the cultural war hot button topic, according to a report from The Daily Wire.
It appears the public campaign against the musician was effective because the aged rocker retracted his earlier comment and is now singing a different tune.
Rock ‘n’ roll is all about rebellion and artists of the genre became famous for breaking guitars as often as societal rules. Industry legends knew they were loved and believed — “Love means never having to say you’re sorry.”
Santana took a different approach, apologizing to people who may have been “hurt” by his words.
“I am sorry for my insensitive comments,” Santana said in a post to his Facebook. “They don’t reflect that I want to honor and respect all person’s ideals and beliefs.
“I realize that what I said hurt people and that was not my intent,” he continued. “I sincerely apologize to the transgender community and everyone I offended.”
Santana added his personal goal that he said he strives to achieve every day.
“I want to honor and respect all person’s ideals and beliefs whether they are LGBTQ or not,” said Santana. “This is the planet of free will and we have all been given this gift. It takes courage to grow and glow in the light that you are and to be true, genuine, and authentic.”
“We grow and learn to shine our light with Love and compliments. Have a glorious existence. Peace.”
The comment he apologized for was issued during an Atlantic City show in late July. Attendees reported that Santana paused his performance after just one song to address the audience.
He reportedly spoke for several minutes before resuming his set.
“When God made you and me, before we came out of the womb, you know who you are and what you are,” he told audience members. “Later on, when you grow out of it, you see things, and you start believing that you could be something that sounds good, but you know it ain’t right.”
“Because a woman is a woman and a man is a man,” the rocker remarked. “That’s it. Whatever you wanna do in the closet, that’s your business. I’m OK with that.”
Santana also expressed support for comedian Dave Chappelle, who has faced criticism for making similar comments in the past.
“I am like this with my brother Dave Chappelle,” Santana added.
