Chick-fil-A Triggers With Strict New Policy for Teens

An Ohio Chick-fil-A location has ignited controversy with its announcement of a strict policy targeting teenage customers just as students prepare to return to school.

The Kettering, Ohio restaurant posted a statement on Facebook Wednesday informing customers about its “Teen Chaperone Policy,” which has divided the community between those supporting the business and parents defending their children.

The restaurant stated it wanted to ensure everyone knew about the policy as school began.

The business expressed gratitude for customer support while emphasizing its commitment to maintaining a safe and enjoyable environment for all patrons.

Under the new rules, any customer 17 years old or younger must be accompanied by someone over 21 years old to eat inside the restaurant.

The policy gives staff authority to ask unaccompanied minors to leave the premises.

The Facebook announcement immediately triggered strong reactions from customers who viewed the policy as unfair to well-behaved young people.

Critics questioned why responsible teenagers should face restrictions due to the actions of disruptive peers.

One concerned woman commented that punishing good children seemed unfortunate.

She suggested the restaurant should instead reserve the right to remove disruptive individuals regardless of age rather than implementing a blanket chaperone requirement.

The Kettering location responded to her concerns through private messaging, though the content of that communication remains undisclosed.

Other parents echoed similar frustrations, with one mother noting her son and his friends had planned to eat at the restaurant after school.

She agreed that disruptive customers should be removed but opposed the broad policy affecting all teenagers.

Another customer predicted the restaurant would lose significant revenue from students visiting before and after sporting events.

She characterized the decision to ban unaccompanied minors as a serious business mistake.

Some community members defended the restaurant’s decision, however, citing widespread problems with teenage behavior in public establishments.

One supporter directly blamed parents for raising disrespectful children who disrupted businesses.

The defender noted that teachers, coaches, librarians and law enforcement officials consistently report problems with unruly youth behavior.

She argued that multiple authority figures had warned parents about their children’s conduct.

The Daily Mail outlined that a former restaurant employee shared her experience dealing with hundreds of teenagers who destroyed her workplace every Friday.

She acknowledged that some young customers behaved appropriately but noted that disruptive groups ruined the experience for everyone.

Several commenters pointed out that the Kettering location was not unique in implementing such policies.

They referenced local shopping centers that had adopted similar restrictions on unaccompanied minors.

A Chick-fil-A spokesperson explained that individual franchise locations establish their own specific policies based on local circumstances.

The company noted that restaurant owners operate independently and adapt rules to their particular situations.

The spokesperson revealed that the Kettering restaurant’s policy mirrors the shopping center where it operates.

The Town and Country Shopping Center implemented its own “Teen Chaperone Policy” in January 2022, requiring anyone under 18 to be accompanied by an adult.

Other Chick-fil-A locations have adopted comparable measures, including a Royersford, Pennsylvania restaurant that announced a similar policy in February 2023.

That location provided detailed justification for its decision through a comprehensive Facebook statement.

The Pennsylvania restaurant cited specific problems including excessive noise, failure to dispose of trash properly, disrespectful treatment of staff and teenagers walking through drive-thru lanes.

Management described these behaviors as creating an unpleasant experience for other customers and staff members.

The Royersford location set its age limit at 16, requiring anyone younger to be accompanied by an adult for dining in the restaurant.

Management emphasized the need to protect both guests and staff while maintaining the building’s condition.
