Many people witnessed the car accident that resulted in two University of Georgia students’ deaths and two other injuries last Sunday. Several calls to emergency dispatchers reported capacitors from downed power lines popping, according to a TMZ report.

Offensive lineman Devin Willock, 20, and football team recruiting member Chandler LeCroy, 24, were returning from a championship celebration last Sunday. Another offensive lineman and another recruiting team member were also in the SUV driven by LeCroy, according to police.

Willock died in the accident, according to police. LeCroy was transported to a hospital where she died from her injuries. A rear seat passenger is reportedly in critical condition, while the front seat passenger, who reportedly wore his seat belt, escaped with minor injuries.

A number of witnesses called 911, advising authorities of the severe accident, according to the TMZ report. One caller informed dispatchers the accident and its aftermath sounded like “multiple gunshots going off in the streets.”
One 911 caller notified dispatchers about a power line downed by the crashing vehicle. “All the electricity keeps exploding out here,” the caller stated, according to the report. “There’s been three different explosions. … Oh my God, there’s another one!”
A different caller informed emergency services that emergency medical personnel may be needed.”There’s arcing wires; there’s people on the floor; it’s a crashed vehicle,” the caller explained. “We think someone might be dead.”

The report noted a woman located in the apartment building the wrecked SUV eventually lodged against described the wreckage as so bad she was unable to open her home’s door.

Athens-Clarke County Police Department officers responded to the single vehicle crash on Barnett Shoals Road around 2:45 a.m., according to a report in The Atlanta Journal-Constitution. Responding officers determined the 2021 Ford Expedition, driven by LeCroy, was traveling south when the vehicle veered from the outside lane of the road, striking two power poles and several trees before coming to a stop.

Police said in a report LeCroy’s vehicle was traveling at a high rate of speed and struck a utility pole, which sliced her Expedition in half. The rear passenger quarter panel of the SUV then struck a tree, authorities added.
