Darius Miles, a University of Alabama basketball player, has been charged with murder following the shooting death of a 23-year-old woman.
The incident occurred near the University of Alabama’s Tuscaloosa campus early Sunday morning. According to a local ABC News affiliate, Miles, 21, and Michael Lynn Davis, 20, opened fire at a car at about 1:45 a.m..
Jamea Jonae Harris was struck by a bullet and died at the scene.
Investigators report the individuals were in a “minor argument” while driving along “The Strip” before the shooting.
Surveillance video appears to have caught the moment Miles discharged a weapon in the direction of Davis’ car. Reportedly, bystanders hearing gunfire ran for cover.
In a grainy doorbell cam video posted but later removed from Twitter, a woman is heard screaming as she seeks safety with another female bystander, according to the New York Post,
Reportedly, video shows two cars passing the home and then the sound of at least 10 gunshots.
Police report that after interviewing witnesses and reviewing surveillance footage, they identified Miles and Davis as suspects in the shooting. Police have charged the two with capital murder.
Unsubstantiated reports suggest one of the suspects was injured when someone in Harris’ car returned fire.
Tuscaloosa Police Capt. Jack Kennedy said: “At this time, it appears that the only motive was a minor altercation that these individuals had with the victim as they were out on The Strip.”
Video posted by AL.com appears to show Miles crying while en route to be transported by law enforcement personnel.
The University of Alabama’s athletic department director ordered that Miles’ bio information be deleted from the school’s website.
The University of Alabama Athletics Department released the following statement:
“First and foremost, we extend our deepest sympathies to the family and friends of the victim from last night’s incident. We were made aware of the recent charge against student-athlete Darius Miles, and he is no longer a member of the Alabama men’s basketball team.”
The university added that its “utmost priority is the safety and well-being of the campus community. We are grieved by the incident that occurred near campus last night and extend our deepest condolences to the victim’s family and friends.”
