A former New Jersey Republican governor has expressed his intention to follow former President Donald Trump around the country if Trump continues to skip GOP primary debates.
Presidential candidate Chris Christie’s statement was made during a recent interview with Howard Kurtz on the Fox News program “Media Buzz.”
“Did Trump defuse your strategy of going toe-to-toe with him by staying off the debate stage and saying since he’s gotten a big lead nationally in the national polls, that he is not going to do any of the debates?” asked Kurtz.
“Well, if he doesn’t do any of the debates, Howie, you know, we’re gonna give him another chance,” replied Christie. “I’m sure he’s not coming to the Reagan debate. We’ll give him another chance in Alabama.”
“But if he doesn’t come there, then I’m going to follow him around the country,” continued Christie. “Wherever he goes, I’ll go. And we’ll wind up talking to each other one way or the other. And he knows that’s true.”
Mr. Kurtz enquired if Christie would change his travel schedule in order to follow the 45th president, to which the former N.J. governor responded affirmatively.
Trump, 77, last month announced his decision to skip Republican Party primary debates but it is unclear if he intends to skip all future debates or just the initial ones, according to a report from the Daily Wire.
The former president’s decision was reportedly influenced by a CBS News poll that highlighted his lead over other candidates in national polling.
“I WILL THEREFORE NOT BE DOING THE DEBATES!” Trump posted to his Truth account shortly afterward.
RNC Chairwoman Ronna McDaniel mentioned earlier in the day that she is “still holding out hope” President Trump will debate because it’s “so important that the American people hear from all the candidates.”
