CNN and several other Warner Bros. Discovery networks suffered a widespread technical outage Monday afternoon that knocked programming off the air for nearly an hour and left viewers staring at frozen and distorted television screens.
The disruption began shortly after noon Eastern time and affected multiple networks owned by Warner Bros. Discovery, including CNN, HBO, TNT and TBS.
CNN was broadcasting its midday program “Inside Politics” when the technical failure occurred.
Anchor Dana Bash and a panel were discussing President Donald Trump’s ongoing trade dispute with Canada when the television feed suddenly froze.
The broadcast subsequently deteriorated into pixelated blocks of color and fragmented images before CNN’s signal disappeared.
Viewers quickly began reporting the apparent outage on social media, with the exact appearance of the disruption varying depending on the television provider and method customers were using to watch the affected networks.
The problem was not limited to CNN, however.
A spokesperson for the network confirmed that the disruption stemmed from a broader technical problem affecting Warner Bros. Discovery’s television operations.
The company did not immediately provide additional information explaining exactly what caused the failure.
CNN remained affected for much of the following hour as technicians worked to restore the network’s television signal.
Programming eventually returned shortly before 1 p.m. Eastern time.
At approximately 12:51 p.m., Bash returned to viewers on “Inside Politics” and acknowledged the unexpected interruption.
“Welcome back and we are back,” Bash said.
“There was a technical issue across Warner Bros. Discovery’s channels that resulted in losing our signal. We’re very sorry for the interruption.”
The incident represented a significant technical breakdown for one of the largest media companies in the United States, particularly because several major television networks were simultaneously affected, per Trending Politics.
Warner Bros. Discovery operates a broad portfolio of cable channels and entertainment properties. Along with CNN, HBO, TNT and TBS, the company’s television holdings include several other prominent entertainment and lifestyle networks.

The network had been covering the escalating trade tensions between the Trump administration and Canada when its signal abruptly failed.
There was no indication from Warner Bros. Discovery that the outage resulted from anything other than a technical problem.
The company also did not report any security incident connected to the disruption in the information initially released about the outage.
The failure came at a particularly active time for political coverage, with CNN and other major news organizations closely following developments involving the Trump administration.
Despite the unusual nature of the interruption, CNN was able to resume its regular programming within approximately an hour.
Bash’s brief explanation and apology marked the network’s return to normal broadcasting following the disruption.
