CNN has come under fire for describing an alleged murder that took place last week as an “accident.”
Two teenage girls, aged 13 and 15, attack an Uber Eats delivery driver inside his car while he was driving on Tuesday. They allegedly carjacked and assaulted him with a stun gun.
This caused the car to crash and flip on one side. The driver, Mohammad Anwar, was found from the vehicle onto the sidewalk. He was taken to the hospital but could not be saved.
The girls were arrested at the scene and later charged with felony murder. One of them was also charged with possession of a Taser.
A homicide detective told the court that the girls agreed in advance to do a carjacking, according to ABC7.
While reporting on the story, CNN described it as an “accident” both in its report and on Twitter. The network specifically appeared to refer to the crash as an “accident.”
“Police said the girls, 13 and 15, assaulted an Uber Eats driver with a Taser while carjacking him, which led to an accident in which he was fatally injured,” CNN’s official account tweeted on Saturday.
Critics slammed the network for the wording.
“Two girls murdered a man after car jacking him. Fixed it for you,” one Twitter user wrote in response.
“They murdered him. The teens murdered the driver. You are allowed to say that,” another user said.
“‘Fatally injured’ is a weird way to say MURDERED,” wrote one user.
“So they “accidentally” killed him?” asked another user.
Others pointed out that while CNN often highlights the race of the killers, this time it didn’t mention race.
