A surprising error by CNN sparked widespread confusion this week when the network aired a tribute package implying that actor Michael J. Fox had died.

The Back to the Future star, 64, quickly set the record straight on social media, using humor to reassure fans that he is very much alive.

The segment, titled “Remembering the Life of Actor Michael J. Fox,” highlighted Fox’s career from his early role as Alex P. Keaton on Family Ties to his iconic portrayal of Marty McFly.

The package also recounted his decades of advocacy for Parkinson’s disease research, a cause close to his heart since his 1991 diagnosis.

Fox responded on Threads with characteristic wit, posting a multiple-choice reaction to the broadcast: “How do you react when you turn on the TV and CNN is reporting your death?”

Options included changing the channel, calling his wife, or “relax, they do this once every year.”

He concluded, “I thought the world was ending, but apparently it’s just me and I’m ok. Love, Mike.”

CNN quickly issued an apology, acknowledging the mistake and removing the package from all platforms.

“The package was published in error; we have removed it from our platforms and send our apologies to Michael J. Fox and his family,” a spokesperson with the network said, according to NBC News.

Fox’s presence at PaleyFest Los Angeles on April 6 further confirmed his well-being.

He appeared on a panel celebrating the conclusion of Season 3 of Apple TV’s Shrinking, where he guest stars as a character navigating Parkinson’s alongside the show’s protagonist, Dr. Paul Rhodes, played by Harrison Ford, according to US Magazine.

This marked Fox’s first on-screen role since stepping back from acting in 2020.

Over the years, Fox has balanced acting with extensive philanthropy.

After revealing his Parkinson’s diagnosis publicly in 1998, he founded The Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson’s Research in 2000, which has raised over $2.5 billion to advance treatments and fund research.

His humanitarian efforts earned him the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award in 2022 and the Presidential Medal of Freedom from former President Joe Biden in 2023.

Despite the progression of his condition, Fox continues to manage an active public life with careful planning.

On set, aides help him navigate physical limitations, allowing him to engage in acting roles that reflect his real-life experiences.

He told Variety, “I just enjoy the little math problems of existence,” highlighting his commitment to balancing career, advocacy, and family life.

The incident highlights the importance of accuracy in media reporting.

Even major outlets can misstep when handling prepared tribute packages, highlighting the need for verification before broadcasting sensitive content.

Fox’s calm, humorous response illustrates resilience in the face of misinformation while reminding the public that prominent figures with complex health histories deserve careful treatment.

From career milestones to advocacy work, Michael J. Fox remains a figure of inspiration.

The CNN mix-up, while unsettling, ultimately reinforced the actor’s ability to confront challenges with humor and grace, demonstrating the ongoing impact of his work both on and off the screen.
