A U.S. Coast Guard crew successfully rescued a man who was stranded on an island in the Bahamas for three days, following the breakdown of his sailboat.
The incident took place on Cay Sal, an island situated between Florida, Cuba and the Bahamas, according to a Fox News report. The Coast Guard Cutter Paul Clark’s crew rescued the 64-year-old Bahamas man Friday.
“A Coast Guard Air Station Miami HC-144 Ocean Sentry aircrew located a man stranded on the island and dropped supplies including food, water and a radio to establish communication,” according to a statement.
“The man notified the crew he’d been stranded for three days after his vessel became disabled during his voyage,” the Friday Coast Guard statement continued.
The Bahamian citizen, managed to catch the attention of the Coast Guard cutter by firing flares into the sky from his boat.
“We’re proud to have saved this man’s life,” said Coast Guard Petty Officer 3rd Class Dev Craig.
“This case serves as a perfect example of why you must have the proper safety equipment on your vessel,” Craig continued. “Without seeing the flare, the case may not have had a successful outcome.”
After locating the man whose identity has not yet been publicly released, the Coast Guard crew provided him with essential supplies, including food, water, and a radio to maintain communication with authorities.
The man was subsequently rescued and transported to a hospital for medical evaluation, according to a report from the New York Post.
