Paul Pelosi, multimillionaire husband of Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi, had allegedly slurred speech and a drug in his system and attempted to give arresting officers a police courtesy card when he was arrested in May on DUI charges.
Pelosi’s 2021 Porsche and the other driver’s 2014 Jeep sustained “major collision damage” in the crash around 10:17 p.m. on May 28. Responding officers found Pelosi in his driver’s seat in his damaged car near the intersection of California Route 29 and Oakville Cross Road.
Pelosi allegedly handed officers his driver’s license and an “11-99 Foundation” card when they asked for his ID, according to released court documents. The 11-99 Foundation is a California Highway Patrol charity that supports officers and provides scholarships for their children.
Pelosi allegedly exhibited “signs of impairment” during field sobriety tests, and officers “observed objective signs and symptoms of alcohol intoxication,” according to the documents.
“He was unsteady on his feet, his speech was slurred, and he had a strong odor of an alcohol beverage emanating from his breath,” the complaint alleges. It also claims he had “red/watery” eyes.
The other driver, who was only identified in the documents as John Doe, was standing outside an SUV.
Both drivers declined medical treatment at the scene, but the other driver told Napa County prosecutors on June 2 that he had begun suffering pain in his upper right arm, right shoulder and neck the day after the crash. He also complained of headaches and said it was difficult to lift things with his right arm.
Pelosi allegedly injured the other driver “while under the influence of an alcoholic beverage and a drug and under their combined influence,” the first count in the two-charge complaint reads. Investigators also determined that he had a blood-alcohol content of 0.0082 percent.
Pelosi bailed out of jail the morning after the crash for $5,000.
The Napa County DA refused to release body cam and dash cam footage from the night of the crash, claiming that it could “jeopardize” an ongoing investigation.
“The Napa County District Attorney’s Office has advised the release of records would jeopardize an ongoing investigation. As such, records are being withheld pursuant to Government Code section 6254 (f),” the office wrote to Fox News when they requested access to the information.
Speaker Pelosi’s office has previously said it would not comment on the incident, which a spokesperson said happened while she was on the opposite side of the country.
Both of the Pelosis have been in headlines lately after it was revealed that Paul Pelosi made a sizable stock purchase just days before a major legislative vote, investing over $5 million into chip manufacturers as Congress was set to vote on legislation that could give these developers over $52 billion.
Speaker Pelosi claimed that she never gave her husband any information on congressional voting that could move markets.
