A quiet pre-dawn moment inside a Philadelphia Dunkin’ Donuts set off a chain of terrifying events that has left police searching state lines for answers.
Zymire Hughes, 22, now has a name attached to the horror-mask assaults that gripped the city’s Center District last week.
Philadelphia police announced the identification on X, writing, “The masked suspect sought in the 8/12 assaults near 15th & JFK has been identified as Zymire Hughes, 22.”
Officers currently hold an active warrant for his arrest. Hughes, however, is nowhere to be found within Pennsylvania’s borders.
Investigators believe frequent travel patterns may be aiding his disappearance. Hughes reportedly shuttles between the East Coast and two western states for work.
Police described this pattern directly. “We’ve received information he has a tendency to travel back and forth to the West Coast, California, the L.A. area, but also Las Vegas, for employment reasons,” officers said.
The saga reportedly started small. Hughes allegedly walked into a Dunkin’ Donuts just after 5:20 a.m. donning a mask resembling the murderous doll from the “Child’s Play” film series.
Employees turned him away almost immediately. His conduct inside the store struck staff as unsettling enough to deny him service altogether.
Rejection at the counter did not end the episode. Hughes allegedly moved through the surrounding blocks afterward, approaching strangers while recording video of the encounters on his phone.
A woman jogging nearby became his most alarming target. Hughes allegedly closed the distance between them while pointing his phone directly at her face.
Philadelphia Police Captain Jason Smith walked through what happened next. “He’s holding his cell phone up in front of her, at which time he asks her ‘Are you ready to die?'” Smith said.
Fear registered immediately on the jogger’s face, according to Smith. The masked man reportedly pressed the question a second time before she bolted.
“[She] appears startled, at which time the male asks her again, ‘Are you ready to die?’ Clearly she’s not ready to die, so she takes off,” Smith said.
Escape came at a physical cost. The jogger twisted her leg while sprinting away, all the while “screaming for help,” Smith noted.
Legal consequences for Hughes have piled up quickly.
Charges now include terroristic threats, harassment, assault, reckless endangerment and intimidation, spanning what authorities describe as six separate targeted encounters.
A weapons charge rounds out the list, tied specifically to his posture during the jogger confrontation.
Hughes allegedly kept his right arm hidden behind his back throughout the exchange, even though surveillance video captured no actual weapon.
One bystander refused to stand by silently. A witness named Jameka told WPVI that she noticed the masked man trailing the jogger and tried to intervene before things escalated.
“I started to wave at her from across the intersection and say, ‘Hey there’s someone behind you, look behind you,'” Jameka said.
Jameka’s involvement did not stop at a warning. She confronted Hughes directly, landing a kick to his chest that sent him reeling.
Confusion, more than menace, defined his reaction, Jameka said. She noted that her bags sat untouched throughout the entire ordeal despite being within his reach.
“He just seemed so disoriented about what his goals actually were. I had bags; he wasn’t reaching for those,” Jameka said.
His next move puzzled her further. Hughes appeared to drift toward La Colombe, a nearby coffee shop, without any apparent plan once he got there.
“It didn’t seem like he had a clear goal to like actually get in La Colombe to do anything, so I was like OK, well, let’s see if you can fight, and he couldn’t,” Jameka said.
Philadelphia police have since committed significant resources to tracking Hughes down. Captain Smith made the department’s determination clear in comments delivered earlier this week.
“Trust me when I tell you this… we’re not going to do our darnedest to try and locate this individual? You bet we are,” Smith said.
The manhunt continues as officers follow leads tied to Hughes’ western travel history. No updates on his location have been released since the warrant was issued.
Residents near 15th Street and JFK Boulevard remain on alert as the search stretches into its second week. Authorities have asked anyone with information to come forward.
