‘Cringy’ Talarico Clip Even Makes CNN’s Abby Phillip Laugh

A moment rarely seen in cable news unfolded this week when a CNN host declined to defend a Democratic Senate candidate’s own words.

James Talarico, a Texas state representative running for the U.S. Senate seat, found himself at the center of the segment after resurfaced video from 2020 circulated widely.

The footage captured Talarico speaking at a virtual event hosted by the Sierra Club. In it, he tied together three concepts as interconnected forces of oppression.

“Young activists have really drawn the link between climate change and white supremacy and capitalism in our country,” Talarico said. “And I think only in the ways that all three of those oppressive systems work together are we going to be able to begin the process of dismantling them.”

CNN “NewsNight” host Abby Phillip took up the clip during her Tuesday broadcast. Phillip has generally been viewed as a host aligned with Democratic viewpoints, making her response notable.

Rather than defending the remarks, Phillip pointed to the timing of their resurfacing.

She observed that Talarico is now attempting to position himself as a broader, more moderate candidate to a general electorate.

Phillip reported that a campaign spokesperson confirmed to CNN that Talarico has acknowledged certain past comments “missed the mark.”

Talarico himself used a different word to describe them, calling the remarks “cringy.”

Phillip’s on-air assessment went further than simply reporting the campaign’s response. “It is what some people are calling peak woke,” she said. “It’s almost like woke mad libs in that statement.”

The Sierra Club footage represents just one entry in a growing list of past statements attributed to Talarico. He has previously stated that “God is nonbinary” and referenced a claim of six biological sexes.

Separately, Talarico has made comments identifying white men as America’s greatest terrorism threat. He has also proposed treating the U.S. southern border as a “front porch.”

Talarico is currently the Democratic nominee for the Senate seat, positioning him for a potential general election matchup against Republican incumbent Attorney General Ken Paxton.

Paxton himself has faced criticism from figures across the political spectrum, including within his own party.

A separate controversy involving Talarico centers on his response to the criminal conviction of Karmelo Anthony, a Black teenager found guilty of fatally stabbing a white teenager.

Video evidence and eyewitness testimony were both presented during the trial.

Talarico commented specifically on the racial makeup of the jury that returned the conviction.

“I know that there were no black members of the jury, and to me, that’s the only evidence you need to really prove that this system is not working for black Texans,” he said.

His comment addressed the jury’s demographics rather than the trial’s evidentiary record, which included video footage of the stabbing.

Talarico has also branded himself as a “Presbyterian seminarian” throughout his campaign, referencing his background in theological studies.

That self-description came under renewed scrutiny following a February interview with The New Yorker.

In the interview, Talarico offered his own framework for comparing Judaism, Christianity, and Islam.

“My campaign manager and I talk about how Judaism is Season 1 of the show, Christianity is Season 2, and Islam is Season 3,” he said. “I’m Season 2 — the most violent season. My religion has done more damage to both of those religions than they’ve done to each other.”

He extended the comparison by suggesting that people outside Christianity might better reflect its values than some Christians do.

Talarico said even Hindus and atheists could be “more Christlike than some Christians.”

The statements span nearly six years, from the 2020 Sierra Club forum to the February 2026 New Yorker profile.

Each has resurfaced publicly at different stages of Talarico’s political rise, culminating in his current position as the party’s Senate nominee.

Talarico’s campaign has addressed some of the criticism directly, acknowledging the tone of his earlier comments without disavowing his underlying policy positions.

The acknowledgment came only after the remarks had already begun circulating in conservative media outlets.

Phillip’s willingness to characterize the remarks critically, rather than provide context favorable to Talarico, distinguished the CNN segment from typical network coverage of Democratic candidates.

The seat Talarico is seeking is considered competitive heading into the midterm elections, with implications for which party controls the Senate.

The race remains unresolved, with the general election still ahead and Talarico’s record of public statements likely to remain a point of scrutiny throughout the campaign.

A recap of what James Talarico believes:

– Jesus Christ was a "radical feminist"
– White men are the "greatest" terror threat
– There are "six" biological sexes
– The border should be a "front porch"
– Atheists are "more Christ-like" than Christians

James Talarico says Karmelo Anthony was convicted because "there were no black members of the jury" and the "system is not working for black Texans."
