President Joe Biden expressed continued support for gun restrictions in the aftermath of the Colorado club shooting that killed six.
“The idea we still allow semi-automatic weapons to be purchased is sick,” Biden said during a Nantucket, Massachusetts, press event at a local fire department. “Just sick. It has no socially redeeming value. Zero. None. Not a single solitary rationale for it except profit for the gun manufacturers.”
A reporter questioned whether he would be able to pass any new gun control legislation since Republicans gained a majority in the House. Biden responded that he would try.
When pressed for details about what he would try to accomplish, the president explained he was going to try to get rid of assault weapons.
“I’m going to do it whenever I — I got to make that assessment as I get in and start counting the votes,” he stated.
Critics hopped on social media to pan the president’s stated aim of banning all semi-automatic weapons. Many claimed Biden was clueless about what semiautomatic means.
“Biden now backing sweeping ban of “semi-automatic weapons,” commented RealClearPolitics’ White House Reporter Philip Wegmann. His comment appeared above a graphic with Biden’s remarks about banning semi-auto weapons.
“Banning semi-automatic guns, as Biden proposes here, would make illegal an overwhelming number of rifles, pistols, and shotguns,” Wegmann observed in a follow-up tweet.
Hollywood actor James Woods opined that essentially all guns are on the Big Guy’s chopping block.
Congressman Thomas Massie (R-KY) reminded Biden that voters have consistently rejected congressional attempts to denude Second Amendment rights.
“Americans rejected Pelosi’s gun control schemes in the mid terms, yet here is Biden saying he wants to ban modern firearms, and maligning most gun owners,” Rep. Massie remarked in a Thanksgiving Day tweet.
Breitbart News political editor Emma-Jo Morris succinctly stated: “He clearly doesn’t know what semi-auto is.”
“Wow,” exclaimed Judicial Watch President Tom Fitton. “Are there any guns Biden would not ban?”
