Many friends, family members and fans have expressed concern for the Buffalo Bills Safety, Damar Hamlin, who suffered a cardiac arrest following a brutal hit during Monday night’s NFL game against the Cincinnati Bengals.
NFL medics provided CPR on Hamlin for 10 minutes while the game was temporarily paused. NFL officials ultimately decided to reschedule the game.
A spokesperson for the Bills noted that Hamlin’s “heartbeat was restored on the field.” Damar remains in critical condition at UC Medical Center.”
Damar‘s family reported on the 24-year-old athlete’s condition on Tuesday evening.
Hamlin’s uncle, Dorrian Glenn, told CNN that medical staff had “flipped [Damar] over on his stomach” to help address “some damage to his lungs.”
“His heart had went out so they had to resuscitate him twice,” Glenn said. “They resuscitated him on the field before they brought him to the hospital and then they resuscitated him a second time when they got him to the hospital.”
Glenn added that his nephew is still sedated and on a ventilator.
Glenn added an optimistic note, saying that slowly but surely, Hamlin’s health is “trending upwards in a positive way.”
Local sports reporter Josh Reed noted:
“Just spoke with Damar Hamlin’s uncle. Damar was originally on 100% oxygen and is now down to 50%,” Reed said. “Says the family is hanging in there. He thanked Bills fans and Bengals fans and asked for continued prayers.”
Damar is a man of faith, which prompted ESPN host Dan Orlovsky to pray on air for Hamlin and his family.
The latest update from the Bills, released Tuesday afternoon, noted that Hamlin was still listed in critical condition and sedated.
Hamlin’s family has expressed gratitude for the outpouring of prayers and encouragement following the incident.
“On behalf of our family, we want to express our sincere gratitude for the love and support shown to Damar during this challenging time,” the statement said. “We are deeply moved by the prayers, kind words, and donations from fans around the country.”
The family’s statement added:
“We also want to acknowledge the dedicated first responders and healthcare professionals at the University of Cincinnati Medical Center who have provided exceptional care to Damar.
We feel so blessed to be part of the Buffalo Bills organization and to have their support. We also want to thank Coach Taylor and the Bengals for everything they’ve done. Your generosity and compassion mean the world to us. Please keep Damar in your prayers. We will release updates as soon as we have them.”
