A Democratic congressman seeking reelection said Thursday he would not support President Joe Biden if he seeks reelection in 2024.
“The country would be well-served by a new generation of compelling, well-prepared, dynamic Democrats who step up,” said Rep. Dean Phillips, D-Minn.
In further remarks during his radio show interview, Phillips said he respects the president but believes the White House needs new leadership and expressed concern over the president’s age.
No other president in American history has served at President Biden’s age. He would be 81 during the next presidential campaign if he throws his hat back in the ring in 2024. Biden has not announced his official reelection bid, but has previously said he plans to seek another term, especially if former President Donald Trump runs again.
Many Democrats are either avoiding talking about it or not supporting Biden in 2024 because of bad polling numbers and his advanced age.
Fox News reporter Sandra Smith asked Democratic Rep. Tim Ryan, D-Ohio, if he would support a 2024 Biden presidential bid. “I’m working on my own election,” Rep. Ryan said, “and that’s all I’m focused on right now.”
Ryan who is seeking the open Ohio Senate seat, was asked by Fox News’ Sandra Smith if he would support Biden in 2024, but dodged answering the question.
Rep, Tom Malinowski, N.J., was asked a similar question in a town hall, according to a Fox News report.
“I don’t know if he’s running in 2024 or who’s running,” Malinowski said, “so I’m not going to opine on who should be president.”
New York’s Democrat darling, Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, D-N.Y., is usually assertive and opinionated when discussing politics and politicians. Not so much, though, when recently asked about supporting a Biden bid in 2024.
“We’ll cross that bridge when we get to it,” Ocasio-Cortez told CNN in June. “Should he run again, we’ll take a look at it. Right now we need to focus on winning a majority instead of a presidential election.”
A CNN survey released Thursday shows 75 percent of Democrats want someone other than Biden to lead the Democratic ticket in 2024.
The president’s approval rating sank to an all-time low at 3l percent for his presidency in July.
