Telles, 47, was convicted of first-degree murder in August, and his sentencing included additional time for using a deadly weapon and for the age of the victim, per the Associated Press (AP).

The case has drawn significant attention due to its explosive revelations and Telles’ controversial denial of involvement in the crime.

Jeff German, a reporter for the Las Vegas Review-Journal, became a target after publishing several articles that revealed alleged misconduct within Telles’s office.

The exposés detailed accusations of bullying and disclosed an intimate relationship between Telles and a female staff member.

German’s reporting played a crucial role in Telles’s loss in the 2022 re-election campaign, the Post Millennial (TPM) highlighted.

Despite these tensions, Telles has consistently maintained his innocence in the murder of German, insisting, “I did not kill Mr. German,” even after the guilty verdict.

The evidence, however, told a different story.

Robert Telles is still thinking he is innocent.
This was him on 8/23/2022. When he did murder the late Jeff German in cold blood. He thinks putting on a disguise, will make him not a murderer. This didn’t work for the late Robert Durst when he was Dorothy Criner in Galveston TX. pic.twitter.com/7vMHOrgsdT

Prosecutors presented a combination of DNA evidence, surveillance footage and witness testimony that convinced the jury of Telles’s guilt.

AP noted that a crucial piece of evidence was DNA found beneath German’s fingernails, directly linking Telles to the crime.

Video evidence also showed a suspect wearing a large sunhat and arriving at the crime scene in a vehicle that matched Telles’s car.

Prosecutors said Telles disguised himself and waited outside of German’s home before launching the fatal attack, per AP.

Pamela Weckerly, the lead prosecutor, argued that Telles’s frustration over German’s reporting was the primary motive behind the murder.

“He didn’t like what Mr. German had written about him. He felt that Mr. German had cost him an elected position,” Weckerly stated during the trial.

The jury was presented with evidence of Telles’s movements leading up to the murder, painting a picture of premeditation.

The severity of the crime led Clark County District Court Judge Michelle Leavitt to impose the harshest possible sentence.

She cited the deadly nature of the attack and German’s age, over 60, as reasons for the sentencing enhancements.

The additional eight years pushed Telles’s minimum sentence from 20 to 28 years.

“The judge couldn’t sentence him to any more time,” said Clark County District Attorney Steve Wolfson. “She gave him the maximum.”

Throughout the trial and during sentencing, Telles continued to maintain his innocence, expressing condolences to German’s family while denying his role in the crime.

“I understand the desire to seek justice and hold somebody accountable for this,” he said.

Yet, his refusal to admit guilt was noted by the prosecution and weighed against him during sentencing.

Wolfson emphasized Telles’s lack of remorse as a factor in advocating for the maximum penalty, describing him as “an extreme danger to the community if he is ever released.”

TPM outlined that at the time of his arrest in 2022, Telles held the position of administrator for a county office that managed unclaimed estates and probate cases.

His removal from office followed closely after his arrest, adding another layer of complexity to the case.
