Donald Trump endorsed the reelection campaign of a New York congressional Democrat who managed impeachment proceedings against the former president.
Multimillionaire Dan Goldman (D-NY) was endorsed by Trump just before the last debate between Democratic Party candidates for the state’s 10th Congressional District. The Levi Strauss fortune heir called Trump’s endorsement election meddling in response to a question during Wednesday’s televised debate.
The Daily Wire further reported:
“Lawyer Dan Goldman is running for Congress, NY-10, and it is my great honor to Strongly Endorse him,” Trump said. “I do this not because of the fact that he headed up the Impeachment Committee and lost, but because he was honorable, fair, and highly intelligent. While it was my honor to beat him, and beat him badly, Dan Goldman has a wonderful future ahead.”
“He will be very compassionate and compromising to those within the Republican Party, and will do everything possible to make sure they have a fair chance at winning against the Radical Left Democrats, who he knows are destroying our Country,” Trump continued. “I would like to thank Dan for fighting so hard for America, and for working so tirelessly to stop ‘Trump.’ He was not easy to beat, but winning against him made me realize just how very talented I am!”
Trump’s statement appears to have been an attempt to sabotage Goldman’s chances in the race as Goldman’s opponents immediately capitalized on the opportunity to use Trump’s endorsement as a chance to attack Goldman.
“Last week Donald Trump attacked Dan Goldman, who led his impeachment,” Goldman said in a statement. “Now he’s pretending to endorse Goldman. True to form, Trump is trying to meddle in an election.”
“This is a pathetic attempt at fooling Democrats who are far smarter than Trump is, and it’s clear that only one candidate in NY-10 is living rent-free in Trump’s head,” Goldman continued. “Buckle up Donald. Dan’s coming for you.”
Trump’s endorsement follows publicized tactics of Democrats urging members to switch parties to derail campaigns in states like Georgia and Wyoming. The 45th president’s political ploy marks the first time he and The New York Times, which also endorsed Goldman, have agreed on politics.
