Earlier this month, the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) raided the home of a progressive Tampa politician and her blogger husband in connection with a high-profile hack on Tucker Carlson, according to new reports by local press.
On Friday, the Tampa Bay Times reported that the home of Tampa City Council member Lynn Hurtak and her media consultant husband Tim Burke had been searched by the FBI as part of an ongoing investigation behind the recent security breaches against Fox News.
Hurtak, who currently serves on Tampa’s City Council, has been described as a far-left progressive and maintains ties to the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA) and other socialist organizations. She is emphatically pro-aboriton and has previously spoken in favor of defunding the police though sources now say that her position has evolved to a “community policing” model.
Her husband is Timothy Burke, a blogger, media consultant and journalist who previously worked as an editor for The Daily Beast, which had a role in disseminating some of the Carlson-related leaks. He maintains some measure of influence through his media consulting company Burke Communications, which has remained offline since the day of the raid.
The investigation follows after several high-profile leaks concerning Carlson which have been obtained by the left-wing media advocacy group Media Matters, which are likely the result of a hack on Fox News at some point last year. The organization has released numerous videos with the apparent intention of embarassing Carlson, including behind-the-scenes banter. The media outlet Vice has also published unaired footage from Carlson’s interview with Ye West, also supposedly connected to these hacks.
Despite their role in proliferating this leaked information, the authorities have claimed that neither Vice nor Media Matters are suspected of any criminal wrongdoing in relation to this investigation.
As of this writing, the office of Councilwoman Hurtak has not responded to a request for comment.
