Fox News described Progressive Democrats as tone-deaf for pushing for bail reform in the wake of a Christmas Parade massacre in Waukesha, Wisconsin, that left 5 adults and a child dead and more than 40 injured.
In a previous post, RTM noted that police arrested Darrell E. Brooks Jr. for the crime. Court records show that Brooks has an extensive criminal record and was recently released on $1,000 bail.
His most recent charges include hitting a woman and endangering her life with an SUV, the same vehicle police charged him with using to plow into a crowd of people in Waukesha last Sunday.
A day after the parade tragedy, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.) announced her desire to move forward with Progressive bail reforms. Her concerns were expressed in a letter and posted on Twitter.
Breitbart notes that Progressives Rep. Carolyn Maloney (D-N.Y.) and Rep. Jamie Raskin (D-Md.) joined Cortez in signing the letter.
The letter directs New York City’s five district attorneys to provide information justifying the “excessive bail [practice] in the NYC court system — particularly for low-income defendants.”
Cortez tweeted: “We have grave concerns that excessive bail amounts are leading to unnecessary pretrial detention and contributing to a humanitarian crisis in New Your City’s jail system.”
Her letter also pointedly noted that 14 people died this year in the custody of the New York City Department of Corrections and warned “federal intervention” may be necessary to address the situation, which she described as “unacceptable.”
Her letter misleadingly stated that “more than 75% of individuals in custody haven’t been convicted of a crime, and are confined in unsafe conditions simply because they cannot afford cash bail….”
In an interview on “Fox & Friends First,” former Democratic New York Assemblyman Dov Hikind spoke about moves by Progressives to enact bail reform and described AOC’s timing as “unbelievable.”
Hikind said “these officials should be arrested for negligence” and argued that it is wrong to “care more about criminals than about civilians.”
Hikind argued that liberal policies and negligent state leaders bear some responsibility for Sunday’s tragedy. In a rebuke to liberal leaders, Hikind said:
“It is shameful, it is disgusting what is going on. People committing crimes again and again? 50 pages of records of crimes committed before the individual in Wisconsin is finally, you know $5 million bail, those people who were murdered by that individual. Do you know who’s responsible? The DA should be arrested.”
