In November, White House Chief Medical Advisor Dr. Anthony Fauci told Americans it was time to “do what you’re told.” On Sunday, Dr. Fauci said boosters may be necessary and Americans are “just going to have to deal with it.”
However, there are reports that the administration’s heavy-handed approach to dealing with COVID-19 is being met with more pushback than compliance.
A Democratic Governor has joined the resistance.
“The emergency is over,” declared Democratic Colorado Gov. Jared Polis in an interview last week with CPR News.
“You know, public health [officials] don’t get to tell people what to wear; that’s just not their job,” Polis continued. “Public health [officials] would say to always wear a mask because it decreases flu and decreases [other airborne illnesses]. But that’s not something that you require; you don’t tell people what to wear.”
Polis’ statement follows three recent courtroom setbacks for the administration regarding vaccine mandates. It also follows disturbing reports of inflated data regarding the number of people vaccinated and the underreporting of adverse reactions to vaccines.
Treading carefully—likely hoping to offend as few Progressive colleagues in his constituency as possible—Polis said:
“Our top goal is always to follow the science, and there was a time when there was no vaccine, and masks were all we had and we needed to wear them. The truth is we now have highly effective vaccines that work far better than masks.”
Polis added: “If you haven’t been vaccinated, that’s your choice. I respect that. But it’s your fault when you’re in the hospital with COVID.”
The Western Journal reports that unlike many Democratic governors—notably Hochul of New York, Newsom of California, Insley of Washington, Brown of Oregon, and Whitmer of Michigan—Polis believes the government cannot compel decisions to wear masks and get vaccinated.
“Those who get sick, it’s almost entirely their own darn fault,” Polis said, adding, “Eighty-four percent of the people in our hospitals are unvaccinated, and they absolutely had every chance to get vaccinated.”
Polis must not have taken note of a FullFact report debunking that claim, at least in Great Britain, where only a reported 35% of COVID-19 hospitalizations are among unvaccinated individuals as of Oct. 21.
