After a devastating loss to President Donald Trump in the 2024 presidential election, Democrats are now looking inward—spending $20 million on a new initiative to understand why American men, especially young ones, abandoned the party in record numbers.
The project, titled “Speaking with American Men: A Strategic Plan” (SAM), comes months after Trump swept the battleground states and secured the popular vote—something he didn’t do in 2016.
The initiative is nicknamed SAM, a reference some have linked to Uncle Sam and historic recruitment efforts, as the party seeks to reconnect with male voters, The Post Millennial reports.
Many, however, are questioning whether the party can reach the very demographic it spent years vilifying.
In recent cycles, Democrats have openly attacked masculinity. California Gov. Gavin Newsom blamed mass shootings on “toxic masculinity” and former President Joe Biden recently told Morehouse College graduates that Republicans’ version of manhood is “toxic.”

Democratic messaging, in recent years, has often focused on issues like gender equity and accountability, particularly in the wake of the Me Too movement — messaging that some critics argue has alienated certain male voters.
In this context, Democrats’ new effort to engage male voters has drawn skepticism and mockery.
The New York Times reports that Democrat donors and strategists have been gathering in upscale hotels to brainstorm how to fix the party’s messaging.
The result is SAM—a data-driven push to win back working-class and younger men, especially online.
The $20 million plan includes investing in digital ads across social media and video games, as well as research into what types of “syntax, language and content” go viral in male-dominated spaces.
The goal, according to internal documents, is to change tone.
“Above all, we must shift from a moralizing tone,” the plan states.
Conservatives say that shift is long overdue.
“They spent years telling men to shut up, sit down, and apologize for being born male,” one user posted on X. “Now they want to ask what went wrong?”
Over the past decade, Democratic support has remained strong among academic institutions, nonprofits and entertainment sectors, TPM reports.Â
However, during that same period, working-class voters across demographic lines have increasingly shifted toward the Republican Party.
Some analysts point to Democratic messaging around social justice and identity issues as a possible factor in that trend.
In 2024, that defection became undeniable. As The Times acknowledged, young voters, black voters and Latinos all swung toward the GOP. Trump’s victory, unlike in 2016, couldn’t be brushed off as a fluke.
One progressive analyst quoted in The Times called the strategy “anthropological,” describing how Democrats now study male voters as though they’re foreign subjects.
“It’s like they’ve just discovered this group exists,” a former Democrat campaign adviser said.
While Democrats still hold sway over elite cultural institutions, they’ve lost the trust of everyday Americans—particularly men who feel abandoned or insulted by their messaging.
The effectiveness of the SAM initiative in regaining lost support among male voters has yet to be determined.
Some political commentators on the right have expressed skepticism about the program’s potential impact.
