House Democrats confirmed that former Hunter Biden business partner Eric Schwerin managed President Joe Biden’s finances throughout his tenure as vice president, according to a Fox News report.
This information was shared by a spokesperson for the Democratic minority of the House Committee on Oversight and Accountability, the report noted.
“Notably, Schwerin, who served as then-Vice President Biden’s bookkeeper from 2009 to 2017, explained that he was not aware of any transactions into or out of the then-Vice President’s bank account related to business conducted by any Biden family member,” said the spokesperson quoted by Fox News.
This statement responded to a request for a memo from the White House, according to the report.
The memo was released as the White House seeks to address the impeachment inquiry into President Biden initiated by House Republicans.
The impeachment inquiry is investigating allegations of Biden’s involvement in his son’s foreign business ventures and whether the Biden family leveraged the former vice president’s position for personal gain.
“Republicans’ own witnesses such as Eric Schwerin, a former business associate of Hunter Biden, said President Biden was not involved in their business dealings,” the White House responded in a statement.
“In a March 2023 interview with Republican and Democratic Committee staff, Schwerin told Committee staff he was not aware of any involvement by President Biden in the financial conduct of the President’s relatives’ businesses, much less any transactions into or out of the then-Vice President’s bank account related to business conducted by any Biden family member,’” citing a section from the Oversight Democrats’ memo in May.
A spokesperson for the Republican majority of the House Oversight Committee challenged this claim, asserting that the Committee “never interviewed Schwerin” as the Democrats and the White House have stated.
“The Committee never interviewed Schwerin,” the spokesperson stated. “There was a meeting but it was about document production. There has never been a transcribed interview or deposition.”
The Democrats’ spokesperson noted Schwerin, whom Hunter Biden once described as a “close confidant and counsel” of then-Vice President Biden, was interviewed by committee staff for several hours on March 31, 2023.
Eric Schwerin’s attorney confirmed the Democrats’ statement but clarified that while Schwerin assisted the then-vice president with his finances, he was not technically a “bookkeeper” for him.
Schwerin’s involvement with the Biden family, both on personal and professional fronts, has been well-documented. He played a pivotal role in Hunter Biden’s business expansion in China.
Peter Schweizer, an expert on Hunter’s business dealings, mentioned in a previous interview that “Eric Schwerin was the money guy” in Hunter’s business ventures, according to the report.
Schwerin’s association with the Biden family extends beyond just business. He visited the Obama White House and then-Vice President Biden’s residence multiple times between 2009 and 2016, the report noted.
He was also a founding partner and managing director of Hunter’s now-dissolved firm, Rosemont Seneca Partners.
