The DNC is in disarray. BallotPedia notes that 31 Democratic members of the House will not seek reelection in November’s midterms. ABC News reports that “more than 1 million voters across 43 states have switched to the Republican Party over the last year.” Today, the Daily Caller reports that several notable Democratic groups have purchased ad spots supporting Trump-backed Republican candidates.
Alarmed Democrats are trying to shame and stifle the efforts and ensure the practice stops before significant harm can be done to the already weak DNC field in November.
According to The Daily Caller, at issue are reports that the Democratic Governors Association (DGA) and the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee (DCCC) made substantial ad buys in support of Trump-backed Republicans and against anti-Trump Republicans.
The DGA reportedly ran ads supporting Dan Cox, now the Republican nominee for governor of Maryland. The DCCC reportedly funded “substantial” ads supporting a primary challenger to Rep. Peter Meijer, R-Mich., who was one of 10 Republicans who voted to impeach Trump after the Jan. 6, 2021, breach of the Capitol building.
The backlash has been fierce and harsh. The Caller captured the following comments.
Democratic Rep. Dean Phillips is “disgusted,” writing on Twitter:
“I’m disgusted that hard-earned money intended to support Democrats is being used to boost Trump-endorsed candidates, particularly the far-right opponent of one of the most honorable Republicans in Congress, @RepMeijer,” Democratic Rep. Dean Phillips of Minnesota.
Former Democratic congressional candidate Krystal Ball tweeted: “Democrats, who want you to believe they are dedicated to protecting democracy, are meddling in a primary to oust one of the few Republicans who voted to impeach Trump after Jan 6th.”
Representative Pramila Jayapal, D-Wash., told Politico that she strongly condemns the actions of the DGA and DCCC, saying, “I just really worry about promoting election deniers and this idea that we’re going to be able to control what voters want at the end of the day.”
Sen. Lou D’Allesandro, D-N.H., told Fox News:
“I think it’s always a bad idea to let people win a primary who could be extremely dangerous if they won. And believe me, in the political world of today, anything can happen and usually does.”
DNC strategist Howard Wolfson told The Washington Post:
“I think it’s very dangerous and potentially very risky to elevate people who are hostile to democracy. Either this is a crisis moment or it isn’t. And if it is — which it is — you don’t play cute in a crisis.”
