Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis confidently declared victory in a forthcoming debate with California Gov. Gavin Newsom.
Speaking to Newsmax on Monday, DeSantis asserted that the debate’s outcome is already clear, with Florida emerging as the superior state due to his policies as governor.
“Well, that’s why he said he would debate me, so I said, let’s do it,” he said. DeSantis emphasized the importance of the debate, not as a competition between Florida and California but as a reflection of the nation’s future direction. He pointed out the significant population shift from California to Florida as evidence of his state’s superior policies and governance.
“It’s an important debate for the country,” DeSantis said, reiterating the significance of the upcoming debate with Newsom. He expressed concern about the nation adopting California’s policies, which he believes have led to its population decline and other issues.
He expressed skepticism toward the media and their narrative, suggesting a bias in their coverage and polling. DeSantis highlighted a particular poll showing former President Donald Trump significantly leading President Joe Biden among voters under 35, a demographic Republicans have historically struggled with.
“Just understand, the media, if [Trump] ends up being the nominee, they will not be putting polls out like that,” DeSantis said. “It’ll be the opposite. I mean, they use this to juice a narrative.”
He continued to discuss the media’s potential agenda, suggesting that they are pushing for Trump’s nomination while also attempting to undermine Biden. DeSantis posited that the media is portraying Biden as weak to encourage the nomination of other Democratic candidates such as Newsom.
“The future for the country, for what the left would want to do, is just double down on the California policies,” he continued.
He concluded by criticizing Biden’s performance, describing it as “really embarrassing” to see him “floundering on the world stage.”
