Joshua Bassett, the star of the Disney+ streaming series “High School Musical: The Musical: The Series,” surprised fans at Saturday’s Nickelodeon Kids’ Choice Awards when he shared of his faith in Jesus Christ and encouraged others to follow his example.
Bassett reportedly grew up exposed to Christianity but “ran the other way … in the pursuit of ‘truth.'” Bassett shared that after years of self-destructive behavior, he renewed his faith in Jesus and has found hope and peace.
Bassett drew criticism in January when he spoke of renewing his faith, declared Jesus as his “Lord and Savior” and posted a video of being baptized in a church in California.
Nevertheless, fans chose Bassett to receive the “Favorite Male TV Star” of a kids’ show award at the popular Nickelodeon Kids’ Choice Awards.
As Bassett accepted his award, he thanked his supporters and cast members, then said: “I’d love to thank my Savior, Jesus Christ.”
Bassett took the opportunity to share a brief testimony and to encourage young fans, many of whom he noted face significant burdens, to look for answers and peace through faith in God. He began: “I want to say something. There are a lot of people here who are burdened, broken-hearted, and have been beaten down by life.”
“I’m here to tell you — for those of you who’ve lost hope, there’s a very real God who loves you more than you will ever possibly know. His promise is peace, and my testimony is my healing.”
Bassett added: “Remember, forgive quickly, love freely, and walk courageously. Love always wins in the end. Thank you very much.”
