A self-proclaimed “activist” in Georgia accused Elon Musk of “starving” Twitter employees. The bold claim comes after Twitter employees revealed that Twitter’s “free lunch” perk was coming to an end after 10 years.
On Friday, The New York Times published an unflattering account of Elon’s takeover of Twitter and his moves to downsize staff and streamline production efforts. In addition to reducing staff, Musk announced remote work options will be greatly reduced and the “free lunch” program will be discontinued.
Hours after the Times article was published, Democrat Andrew Wortman wrote that Elon “fired ¾ of the employees. Now he’s planning to starve the rest of them. He’s failure incarnate.”
Many social media notables came to Elon’s aid — mocking Wortman for his melodramatic statement:
Musk tweeted: “Is this a parody? “I can’t tell.”
Attorney Ron Coleman offered to send Wortman the book, “There’s No Such Thing As a Free Lunch” by Milton Friedman if he promised to read it.
“Here’s a book you might like,” Coleman wrote. “If you promise to read the whole thing, I’ll even send it to you. Free.”
Former gymnast and author Jennifer Sey shared: “Starve? Because well-paid employees have to buy (or bring?) their own lunch? What other industry gives employees free lunch? Surely you’re joking?”
Many other Twitter users blasted Wortman:
“‘Starve’ is a bit much,” The Federalist staff editor Sam Mangold-Lenett tweeted. “Considering the people in question make considerably more than the overwhelming majority of the country, I think they can brown-bag it.”
Investigative journalist Sharyl Attkisson tweeted:
“Strange tweet, even for Twitter. Does anybody really think that companies that don’t provide free lunch are “starving” their employees? I never worked anywhere where lunch was free but somehow I survived. LOL.”

“I pay for my own lunch. What you are describing sounds more like socialism where everyone expects everything for free. No one is entitled to free lunch.”
Woods Walker provided simple instructions regarding what to do in his tweet: “[Go to a] grocery store, buy food, prepare food, put in lunch box, take with you. Millions of workers do this every day, learn from their example.”

The Times has presented Elon as a Scrooge, writing that after finalizing the $44 billion purchase, “Mr. Musk gathered several human-resource executives in a ‘war room’ in the company’s offices in San Francisco.” Elon reportedly said, “Prepare for widespread layoffs … Twitter’s workforce needed to be slashed immediately.”
