Democratic Rep. Eric Swalwell recently expressed his concerns about soft-on-crime prosecutors, highlighting the threat he believes they pose to children.
The California lawmaker’s comments came in response to a distressing incident involving a carjacker who removed a two-year-old boy from a stolen car and abandoned him on the streets of Oakland.
“My wife and I play these scenarios over in our head all the time,” Swalwell wrote on X. “We’ve practiced going out through the back seat to get our kids out of our car if we are carjacked.”
Swalwell’s stance marks a deviation from the views of many of his fellow Democrats, who generally support these prosecutors for their reform-minded approaches. He criticized the leniency of these prosecutors towards violent crime.
“This is not normal. Soft on violent-crime prosecutors are letting too many dangerous people threaten our kids,” he added.
The influence of liberal billionaires in promoting left-wing prosecutors into office across several cities nationwide is notable. George Soros, in particular, has invested tens of millions of dollars in supporting such candidates.
Meanwhile, Oakland, the city where the carjacking incident that sparked Swalwell’s comments occurred, has experienced a significant increase in crime. According to the San Francisco Chronicle, last year saw a 21% rise in violent crime, a 38% increase in robberies and a 23% jump in burglaries in Oakland.
