Mamdani Hammered After Blaming 7-Year-Old’s Death on Guns and Not Criminals

New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani is facing intense backlash after comments he made following the fatal shooting of a 7-month-old girl in Brooklyn, with critics accusing him of focusing on gun policy rather than the individuals responsible for the crime.

The incident involved the death of Kaori Patterson-Moore, an infant who was struck by a stray bullet while sitting in a stroller during what police described as a suspected gang-related shooting.

Authorities say gunmen on a moped opened fire in the Bushwick neighborhood, turning a residential street into a crime scene that shocked the city.

In response, Mamdani emphasized the need to address gun violence, saying the tragedy was a reminder of how much work remains to be done. He spoke about the broader issue of firearms in the city and the ongoing impact of gun-related incidents on families and communities.

“We cannot accept it as normal in our city,” Mamdani said, calling the death a devastating example of the consequences of gun violence and urging continued efforts to address the problem.

That framing quickly drew criticism from political opponents and commentators, who argued that the mayor was misplacing responsibility. Critics said the focus should be on the individuals who carried out the attack rather than the weapons used.

New York City Councilwoman Vickie Paladino was among the most vocal critics, accusing Mamdani of avoiding direct condemnation of the perpetrators. She argued that the city’s criminal justice system has repeatedly failed to hold offenders accountable and said the mayor’s response ignored that reality.

“Literally anything but blaming the criminals,” Paladino wrote, framing the mayor’s comments as politically motivated and disconnected from the root cause of the violence.

Other commentators echoed that sentiment, pointing to separate incidents of violent crime in the city as examples of what they see as a broader pattern. Some argued that focusing on gun control shifts attention away from enforcement and prosecution, while others said the approach reflects a larger ideological divide over how to address crime.

At the same time, law enforcement has moved forward with arrests in the case. Authorities have charged 21-year-old Amuri Greene with murder in connection with the shooting.

A second suspect, 18-year-old Matthew Rodriguez, was arrested in Pennsylvania and is accused of driving the moped used in the attack, per the New York Post.

The case underscores the complexity of public responses to violent crime. On one side, there is an emphasis on addressing systemic issues such as access to firearms. On the other hand, critics argue that immediate accountability for perpetrators should take priority.

Mamdani’s comments reflect a broader policy position that prioritizes reducing gun violence through regulation and prevention. However, the backlash highlights the political risks of that approach, especially in cases involving particularly tragic victims.

The death of an infant has intensified the reaction, turning the incident into more than just a policy debate. It has become a flashpoint for broader disagreements about crime, punishment, and public safety.
