On Sunday night, a fan died in the stands of Gillette Stadium after suffering an “apparent medical event” during the Dolphins-Patriots game, officials say.
Massachusetts State Police confirmed that, during the fourth quarter of the game, at around 11 p.m. ET, in the 308/309 section of the stadium, a 53-year-old man, Dale Mooney of Newmarket, New Hampshire, suffered a medical event, according to Boston 25 News.
Mooney was reportedly taken to Sturdy Memorial Hospital in Attleboro where he was pronounced dead around midnight.
It’s unknown what led to the medical incident, and the Norfolk District Attorney’s Office said there are “no charges in place at this time,” according to Boston 25. The office says the investigation is still in its preliminary stages, according to TMZ Sports.
The DA’s office reported that the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner will perform an autopsy on Mooney’s body at some time on Monday.
State police detectives have been assigned to the case and are collaborating with the Foxboro police department on the investigation.
Earlier in the game, another fan suffered a cardiac arrest, according to Boston 25, but two off-duty firefighters were able to administer CPR for several minutes and resuscitate him.
The New England Patriots were beaten 24-17 by the Miami Dolphins, who currently sit at 2-0 this season, while New England drops to 0-2.
