Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis expressed strong disapproval of Republican House Judiciary Committee Chairman Jim Jordan’s investigation into her actions, describing his investigation as being “flagrantly at odds with the Constitution,” in a letter she penned on Thursday.
“Face this reality, Chairman Jordan: the select group of defendants who you fret over in my jurisdiction are like every other defendant, entitled to no worse or better treatment than any other American citizen,” Willis said. She further emphasized that the notion of her prosecution being politically motivated had been ostensibly debunked by the fact-checking website PolitiFact.
Willis’ letter to Jordan conveyed her belief that he was unlawfully intervening in an ongoing criminal case, thereby infringing on Georgia’s autonomy as a state and compromising the principle of the separation of powers. She asserted that such an intrusion into Georgia’s sovereignty is “offensive and will not stand.” She also clarified that her actions were not driven by political motivations.
The House Judiciary Committee initiated an investigation on August 24 to determine if Willis had collaborated with the Department of Justice (DOJ) to press charges against former President Donald Trump. They sought documents that would shed light on her communications with federal prosecutors and officials. This was revealed in a letter that Jordan addressed to Willis.
Willis didn’t hold back in her response. She advised Jordan to familiarize himself with some fundamental truths and criticized him for his perceived lack of legal knowledge. She even suggested he read a book titled “RICO State-by-State” to better grasp Georgia’s RICO statute. She pointedly mentioned, “As a non-member of the bar, you can purchase a copy for two hundred forty-nine dollars [$249].”
On August 14, a grand jury indicted the former president and 18 others for their alleged attempts to overturn the 2020 election results in Georgia.
The Constitution, Willis highlighted, “clearly permits [her] to ignore” Jordan’s “unjustified and illegal intrusion.”
