Days after the University of Georgia football team won their second consecutive national championship, two members died in a car accident.
Recruiting team member Chandler LeCroy, 24, was the driver of an SUV with offensive lineman Devin Willock, 20, and two other UGA team members leaving a championship celebration Sunday morning.
Athens-Clarke County Police Department officers responded to a single vehicle crash on Barnett Shoals Road around 2:45 a.m., according to a report in The Atlanta Journal-Constitution. Responding officers determined the 2021 Ford Expedition driven by LeCroy was traveling south when the vehicle veered from the outside lane of the road, striking two power poles and several trees before coming to a stop.
Willock reportedly died at the scene as a result of his injuries. LeCroy, 24, was transported to a nearby hospital, where she died from her injuries.
Two other University of Georgia football team members in the vehicle were injured and reported to be in stable condition, according to a statement from the UGA Athletic Association.
“We are all heartbroken and devastated with the loss of Devin Willock and Chandler LeCroy,” said head football coach Kirby Smart in a statement. “Devin was an outstanding young man in every way and was always smiling. He was a great teammate and a joy to coach.
“Chandler was a valuable member of our football staff and brought an incredible attitude and energy every single day.”
“Devin and Chandler were two special people who meant so much to the University of Georgia, our football program and our athletic department,” athetic director Josh Brooks said in a statement. “We ask that everyone keep their families in your prayers during this very difficult time.”
The Journal-Constitution noted numerous reports identifying Warren McClendon and Tory Bowles as the surviving passengers of the crash. University of Georgia officials did not confirm their identities, though, the report added.
McClendon is a junior offensive tackle. He just declared for the NFL draft Saturday, the report continued.
Ms. Bowles was reportedly posting photos of recruiting prospects celebrating with the Bulldogs in their locker room Saturday.
