Ford Halts Shipments of Vehicles to China to Dodge Trump Tariffs: Report

Ford Motor Company has stopped shipping several of its popular vehicles to China following new tariffs imposed under President Trump’s trade policies, according to a Wall Street Journal report published Friday.

The report states that Ford halted shipments of its well-known American-made vehicles, including the F-150 Raptor pickup truck, the Mustang sports car, the Bronco SUV built in Michigan, and the Lincoln Navigator assembled in Kentucky.

According to sources familiar with the situation, this pause in exports is directly tied to Trump’s America First approach to trade, which has reignited tariffs aimed at countering China’s unfair practices.

Vehicles such as the F-150 and the Mustang are now facing tariffs of up to 150% in China—part of Beijing’s retaliation against U.S. import taxes.

It’s a sign that China is feeling the pressure but trying to hit back where it can.

Ford has not yet issued an official statement to Reuters regarding the halted shipments, per the New York Post.

However, the move underscores how U.S. automakers are adjusting to the shifting trade environment under Trump’s leadership.

This latest development comes amid broader efforts by U.S. companies to navigate what some are calling a “tariff tug-of-war,” sparked by President Trump’s ongoing push to level the global playing field.

A source told the Wall Street Journal, “There’s simply no way to absorb a 150% tariff and still sell these vehicles competitively in China.”

This highlights the clear economic incentive to pull back temporarily.

Despite pausing exports of fully-assembled vehicles, Ford will continue shipping American-built engines and transmissions to China, according to the report.

This suggests the company is seeking a middle ground to stay in the Chinese market without losing its shirt.

The Lincoln Nautilus, which Ford manufactures inside China itself, will also remain in circulation despite the tariff war.

Domestic Chinese production avoids the steep import taxes that now apply to American exports.

Still, the decision to halt exports of flagship American vehicles like the Bronco and Mustang is a powerful symbol of the current global trade climate—one shaped by President Trump’s determination to restore U.S. manufacturing strength.

Many conservatives see these tariffs as long overdue.

For decades, China has taken advantage of weak American trade policy, gaining access to our markets while slapping high taxes on U.S. goods.

“Trump’s tariffs are forcing companies to rethink their dependence on foreign markets,” one industry analyst noted. “It’s not painless, but it’s necessary.”

Critics have argued the tariffs may impact short-term profits, but Trump supporters say it’s about the long game: bringing jobs back home and pushing companies to invest in American workers.

The car industry, like many others, now finds itself at a crossroads—continue chasing profits overseas, or realign with an America-focused economy.

Ford’s move signals that even the biggest companies are adjusting to a new world order—one that prioritizes U.S. sovereignty, national security, and fair trade.
