Former Secretary of the Army Patrick Murphy raised ominous alarms about China during a Sunday broadcast of “Fox & Friends Weekend.”
Murphy’s remarks touched on China’s breach of U.S. sovereignty with their spy balloons. He stressed that Americans need to understand “we’re the underdog here,” according to a Fox News report.
His Sunday comments followed a Pentagon statement released Saturday that revealed a U.S. F-22 shot down a third “high-altitude airborne object” over northern Canada.
“A U.S. F-22 shot down the object in Canadian territory using an AIM 9X missile following close coordination between U.S. and Canadian authorities, to include a call today between Secretary of Defense Lloyd J. Austin III and Minister of Defence Anita Anand,” Pentagon Press Secretary Brigadier General Pat Ryder said Saturday in a statement.
Murphy noted the U.S. fighter pilot destroyed what is presumed to be another Chinese spy balloon.
“But, I think we’re sending the message of what would happen, you know, in Ukraine,” the former Army secretary added. “Obviously, we had this incredible coalition, as you know, pushing back on the Russian invasion. And I think it’s sending a message, hopefully sending the right message to China that the world will rally around us if they keep messing around it.”
“What people need to understand in our great country is that we’re the underdog here,” he continued. “We’re a third of their size. And I’m not just talking about geographical and population.”
He opined that the U.S. is a warrior, but at our best we are reluctant warriors. The former Army secretary stressed the country does not want to engage in any unnecessary wars.
“And we need to make sure, when you have less than 1% of the country that’s serving, and you only have 26% of the country that can even serve because of the obesity crisis in America and some other things, we need to wake up, understand that we have a competitor out there in China that thinks they’re the preeminent power in the world.”
“We have to prepare for the worst.”
