Curtis Sliwa, who founded the Guardian Angels and once ran for mayor of New York City as a Republican, was arrested Wednesday during a protest against a tent city for illegal aliens.
Sliwa and supporters may be seen in video footage protesting in front of Creedmoor Psychiatric Center in Queens where a tent shelter for migrants was recently constructed.
The Creedmoor Humanitarian Emergency Response and Relief Center, designed to house 1,000 single male illegals, opened Tuesday, according to an AMNY report.
The facility locals have dubbed it “Tent City,” which opened one day early and was expected to house up to 150 illegals by the end of day, the report noted.
“Have pity. No tent city!” chanted Sliwa during the protest that angered motorists idled by the protestors marching down the middle of the street.
Police officers warned protesters marching in the middle of the road that, if they failed to move on the sidewalk, they would be arrested for disorderly conduct, according to a QNS report.
As protesters marched to the middle of the road disrupting traffic, to immediately move to the sidewalk or they would be arrested and charged with disorderly conduct.
Sliwa and others ignored police orders to get off the street so officers bound Sliwa’s hands with a zip tie and placed him in a prisoner transport vehicle, the report added.
According to the mayor’s office, more than 90,000 illegals have arrived in New York City since the Spring. Mayor Eric Adams said during a press conference earlier this month there is no more room for migrants in NYC.
After the hotel the city contracted with to house illegal aliens became full, arriving homeless were sleeping on streets around the Roosevelt hotel. Hundreds of others were bussed to Long Island and upstate NY hotels.
The Big Apple mayor’s latest solution was the construction of the tent city on the 300-acre grounds of a psychiatric hospital off of Winchester Boulevard.
Illegal aliens are drawn to Gotham because it declared itself a sanctuary city that guarantees housing and other services to any individual in the city.
Gov. Greg Abbott (R-TX) began sending busloads of illegal aliens from his state to northern sanctuary cities like NYC. The arrival of thousands of illegals has changed the mayor’s tune about immigration policy.
He has demanded President Joe Biden and Gov. Kathy Hochul (D-NY) fix the country’s immigration system and provide much more money to help his city.
The latest protest against the city’s handling of the influx of illegals drew numerous area residents, activists and Sliwa to voice concerns about the tent city.
Their concerns revolved around the shelter’s potential impact on local safety, community cohesion and public resources.
Sliwa has a history of public activism, beginning with the Guardian Angels, a volunteer organization dedicated to keeping New York City neighborhoods safe.
During the protest, there was a significant police presence to ensure the safety of all participants. The event remained largely peaceful, but tensions heightened as some protesters attempted to block roads.
