Fox News host and co-moderator of the second GOP presidential debate shared on Tuesday that the seven candidates who qualified to participate in the debate need a breakout moment at Wednesday’s scheduled debate.
The highly anticipated debate will showcase seven GOP candidates — all within nine points of each other in national rankings.
Perino said to Sean Hannity: “One of the challenges for these Republican candidates … is: Everybody on stage thinks they would be a better president than Joe Biden and they think they would be a better president than former President Trump.”
Perino continued: “Now, how do they break out of that pack? President Trump’s lead is so commanding, seemingly enduring. One of these people needs to have a breakout moment so they can say I should be the main rival to President Trump in this contest.”
The Daily Caller reported that the qualifying candidates include: Republican Gov. Ron DeSantis of Florida, businessman Vivek Ramaswamy, former Ambassador to the United Nations Nikki Haley, former Vice President Mike Pence, Republican Sen. Tim Scott of South Carolina, former Republican Gov. Chris Christie of New Jersey and Republican Gov. Doug Burgum of North Dakota.
Former President Donald Trump is far ahead in national polling and will not participate in the event, scheduled to be held at the Reagan Presidential Library in Simi Valley, California, and broadcast Wednesday evening at 9 p.m., ET.
During the first debate, Trump scheduled a counter-broadcast interview with former Fox host Tucker Carlson. The interview garnered several hundred million views on X.
During Wednesday’s GOP debate, Trump will speak in Detroit, Michigan, addressing union members and their two-week-old strike against the “big three” motor companies.
RTM previously reported that Wednesday’s debate will be hosted by Fox News Media’s Stuart Varney and Dana Perino and Univision’s Ilia Calderón.
According to Fox 29, RNC Chairwoman Ronna McDaniel said: “I am excited to announce that our second Republican primary debate will be in partnership with FOX Business, Rumble, Univision … We are looking forward to continuing our fair, neutral, and transparent primary process in Simi Valley to elect the next President of the United States.”
Real Clear Politics polling from Sept. 7 through Sept. 21 showed that Trump holds a record 43.8% lead over the second-place contender, Gov. Ron DeSantis.
Perino also shared with Sean Hannity that the Democrats are in a tough position with confidence in President Joe Biden and Kamala Harris at historic lows and economic trouble looming heavy on the horizon.
“They are stuck in this position where they will say three things,” said Perino. “One, they will say ‘Bidenomics’ is working, you just don’t understand it yet, right? How condescending,” Perino noted.
“Then they’ll say the border is closed, the border is fine,” Perino said skeptically, before adding, “Well, that’s clearly not true.”
Perino added: “The third thing they will say is no one at the White House can keep up with Joe Biden, he is so energetic and useful. No one is buying that either.”
